Tomato Soup?

Hi all, FOOD QUESTION....Tomato soup is my all time favorite. I've been using the mixes that we can get at Dr. Iragu's but that gets kind of costly. And nothing beats good old Campbell's! I thought about doctoring around with Campbells (with Carb Count Milk, Unjury etc to bump up the protein) but I also noticed it's got about 12 grams of sugar in a one cup serving. Anyone have any advice? I think I read or heard somewhere that the sugar in the soup is "natural" and not the same as like sugar in a cake or pie which is "refined" and that the soup would be OK. I am willing to give it a try but I thought I'd check to see if anyone had any advice or experience? THANKS!

I have had tomato soup with no problems before but I would check the label. It seems to me that one of the ingredients is high fructose corn syrup? Not sure and don't have a can handy to check it. I would think it will be one of those trial and error type things. Linda

Wow Linda, Thanks for answering BOTH my questions. Tomato soup is my favorite comfort food and I miss it! Dr. Iragu's mix item is a nice alternative but I miss the real thing... I don't have any on hand either but the next time I am at the store I will check out the label...and like you said "trial and error." Kit (again!)

Ok, I happen to have a can of Campbell's Healthy Request (my 6 year old LOVES it and I figure, it's even better for her than the regular..can't start 'em too young!)...1/2 cup serving has 10 grams of sugar, ingredients in order of listing: tomato puree water high fructose corn syrup wheat flour salt vegetable oil spice extract citric acid Hope this helps...reading labels is extremely important for us these days..and we have to remember about the hidden 'sugars'... Valerie to the rescue with her can of soup! I wonder what the difference is sugar wise between the regular and the Healthy Request. I see a trip down the soup aisle in my future to read the cans, probably buy the can too. Elissa made it sound like a good lunch I haven't had in ages.

I haven't thought about tomatoe soup for awhile. I used to love a grilled cheese & tomatoe soup lunch. Gonna have to check out the sugar & protein content. Then again, if I have 1/2 cup that'll do me. Maybe 1/2 grilled cheese too. MMMMM Good. Sounds like lunch tomorrow. Thanks for the thoughts of this comfort food. I promise I won't overdue it. I have heard of some who do real well with it, and of other who dump like a truck when they try it. I seem to recall someone saying that it is not something you want to try early out ... but not sure about that. Anyway, I have yet to give it a go - just call me chicken little. Unlike our other wonderfully brave ladies!!! You go girls!!! But when I do decide to give it a try, I will likely be trying it with water rather than adding any additional sugar grams with milk, at least my first time trying it. As far as the natural sugars vss the refined sugars, I know people who dump on one or both of them. As far as I can tell, no rhyme nor reason. There was a time that I dumped horribily on simple carbs, but was able to drink regular milk. Go figure ... Different for everyone I guess. Let us know how it goes for you. Something that I found that I really like that may be something else that you would want to try is the Carb Options Chicken Noodle Soup. Only 25 calories and only 2-3 gms of carbs (if this is something you have to concern yourself with). If you have an Odd/Big Lots near you, mine is carrying tons of this item right now for only $.69 a pkg of 4 as opposed to something like 1.69? at the grocery. Either way, it is not as expensive as some items out there. And I add unflavored Unjury to mine to beef up the protein. It is good ... and I also like their creamy chicken and their onion soup flavors, but the chicken noodle is still my fav!!!

Hello - I regular T-soup during my puree days and it was fine. I still have now with cheese or crackers. Good ol' regular Campbells has been fine for me. No bad experiences with it.
