Hi Betsy,
I had a very good experience with 5-D nurses, especially one night nurse, I think her name was Joann. She made me so comfortable and had such a soothing way about her. There was only one nurse ( who shall remain nameless lol) that was quite honestly the ***** from hell on a mega power trip if you ask me but luckilly I only had to deal with her for about an hour the morning I left. The rest were fabulous. I would suggest you remind them that most of us when we are there are smack in the middle of an extremely emotional experience and our feelings can run the full spectrum from joy to fear and everything in between. I think that's why Joann's calming, soothing bedside manner made me feel so good. I really felt like I was in very capable hands and it took alot of the worry of just being in the hospital away. I'm glad patients have an advocate like you who has been there, educating our nurses. Kudos to you!

Dear Elizibeth,
Having been in Christiana for several different reasons and with several different patients I have always found the nursing staff to be for the most part very pleasant. As with any field there are people who enjoy their job and those who are just biding their time. The patient can ALWAYS tell the difference.
The only problem that I had was not with the staff but with my roomate. I don't know where she thought she was but it was like Grand Central Station. She was not a WLS patient but she did have some Major surgery. For the three days that we were together the visitors never stopped. On day 2 I finally had to say something to the nurses because by about 3 or 4 oclock in the afternoon I had already counted 50...that's right 50 visitors. It was like a high school reunion. Although I closed my curtain all the way around me I heard her story over and over and over again.
Now, I had specifically told very few people that I was in there because I didn't want visitors. I wanted to get stronger so that I could get rested and return home ASAP.
The nursing staff ( although I had to repeat it with every shift change) let her know that it would be greatly appreciated if she took her guests into the lounge which was right next to our room. So then I just had to bear the "glares" every time a new guest would come into the room and she would whisper that they needed to go next door because of her cranky roomate.
But the nurses were great and definitely saw that it was not a restful enviorment. They did the best they could.
OH well.....
God bless,
Mama
Hello - I too had mine in Oct 04. I found the nurses on 5D to senitive to my needs. Especially one in particular- I can not remember her name. The first night after my surgery I had a vomiting spell going on for about a 1/2 hr. This one nurse in particular was sooooooooooooooooo kind to me. She even rubbed the top of my head as mother would do a sick child. And I will never, ever forget that. I was feeling mighty bad! I don't remember her face that well let alone her name but I DO remember the care she provided. If all them are her .......like then all WLS patients don't have a thing to worry about!
