this is my first post
Hey Lisa!
Welcome to the wonderful, crazy world of WLS. I had surgery on 9/1 and feel great! I had Dr. Wynn as well and let me tell you, she is the best! (ok, I'm biased, all 3 are pretty darn good!).
As far as getting ready? Just practice some of the steps, small bites, slowing down meals, 'beef' up your protein (pun intended!), start taking your vitamins. That type of thing. This journey is very different for each of us, but we have a great group here and you can count on us to help you along.
Take care, enjoy your holidays and God Bless!

Hi Lisa
Welcome to the DE board. I recently had surgery on 12/8/04. Drs Irgau and Wynn performed my surgery. Everything went well. I feel fantastic. I am so thankful that this surgery was available for me. I had been struggling with weight issues most of my life.
One piece of advise I would offer is to listen and do everything that the doctors tell you to do. When in doubt, call them.
Congrats on your decision for better health in 2005.
Hugs
Rose
Welcome Lisa. Ask away. Someone will answer. Take chapstick to the hospital. Won't need much else. They give you a robe and non-skid slippers. I took my toothbrush & mouthwash and a hair brush. That's about it. Have you found chewable vitamins yet? Found a protein powder you like? We'll save you a seat on the looser's bench. Have a great Holiday. Try to stay focused and positive. By all means have your favorite Last Supper's. You'll be on pureed foods for a month. And if you are like most of us you really won't want much for awhile. I am 11 months out. Again Welcome. Elissa
Hello and welcome Lisa!!!
Advice? Read, research, and ask. Know that your date will get here faster than you plan. I simply could not get everything done that I wanted to do. But it was okay ... because as soon as I recovered ... I had more energy than ever to get to all those tasks.
Advice I usually give is ... not to go overboard on your "last meal(s)". Truly most everything you will be able to eat again one day, just not in the amounts that you may be accustomed. The only thing that I recommend is if you like bread, make sure you have some before surgery. It was a very long time before I could eat any bread again. It can still be iffy on me at times. Seems to be a harder food item for some people. Something else I found useful was to rid myself of sugar and caffeine a while before surgery. Withdrawal from them can sometimes cause headaches ... about the last thing you want to deal with right after surgery in the hospital. Also, do not overbuy before going to the hospital ... your tastes may change. Happens more often than not as I understand it. I also suggest that if you have not already started your vitamins, it is good to do so now to help your body be in as good as shape as possible. Same goes for exercise and protein consumption. If at all possible, walking is excellent to prepare you and it helps to avoid post-op problems. She (my PCP) also told me that upping my protein via good low-fat sources would help build my stores and would help me heal faster and hopefully without incident after surgery, as may help with less hair loss. I started to up mine months before surgery with steak, milk, etc. She also told me to avoid deodorant soaps on my skin except for the areas that really need them. On all other areas ... use a good conditioning soap product. She also said to start with a good body lotion. If you have a double chin, don't forget the neck and under chin area. Somehow I neglected that area, and that is one of my biggest areas of untoned skin. The rest of my skin is doing much better than I thought it would ... even my tummy, which is far from perfect, but considering where it was ... even it is doing pretty good at least skin wise. While the skin is pretty good, the muscles are still shot ... but that is going to take surgery to fix ... pretty much knew that going in. But all in all ... I don't know if those steps helped or not, but I am pleased with the results I have had. Figure it can't hurt to pamper yourself a bit!!!
Elissa is so very right about the chap-stick ... it was my best friend in the hospital ... I think it was even more important to me than my pain meds! Nahhh ... but it was a close second.
Dr Wynn, Dr Irgau are an excellent team. I was/am well pleased with both of them. I have yet to meet Dr Peters, so I can not speak first hand. But I have read many good posts about him. I do not freely give myself over to someone else's hands without truly trusting them ... Dr I and Dr Wynn gained that trust from me. As a matter of fact, I would easily trust them with any of my family members if the need ever arose. The more I deal with them, the more I am convinced that they are top notch caring docs!!! An excellent combination IMHO! I believe you have chosen exceedingly well with this practice.
Plan to research and become as knowledgeable as possible for your healths sake .... truly from this point on, you are going to be your own best advocate. Knowledge is power!
Last but not least ... if ever in the slightest doubt, always ask your doc ... only he/she knows your total health history and your exact surgery.
Hugs,
Tammy
