OK. I'm trying lots of stuff (and feeling like I'm wasting lots of money) but I'm still having trouble finding protein bars (and shakes) that don't make me gag. I need the wisdom of the DE message board. Please let me know what tastes good to you - protein, powders, shakes and bars. I'm trying to prep for my 1/3/05 surgery date and I'm worried that I still haven't found protein sources that are palatable. Keep those suggestions coming! Thank you, Cassandra

Cassandra, Beware of the taste buds changing after surgery! What you find to be gaggy maybe what you like after surgery. I do Nectar and have tried the unflavored Unjury. I won't say I love them but I need them to be healthy so I have made up my mind that I will do them. The ones that have chocolate, vanilla flavors don't make it for me....I do like the Roadside Lemonade with a berry Crystal lite drink or the Strawberry Kiwi. I am a juice drinker so these appealed to me the most! Good luck with your journey. Debbie

Hi Cassandra, Like Debbie said, beware changing taste buds, that is a very real thing that happens. Recently I bought some Jim's Permalean Protein Powder in the doctor's office. I got the bodacious berry flavor and it's VERY good. Not chalky or gritty, mixes up very easily too. I mix it with Carb Countdown 2% I've been told the vanilla flavor in that brand is very good also and I'm buying that next. The hot choc from the docs office is WONDERFUL! Mint Chocolate and Cinnamon flavor are my favs. 15 grams of protein in them and delish. Along that same line of thinking, I also take Carb Countown, heat it up and add sugar free Swiss Miss, or sometimes Vanilla and Splenda, both are equally good. Shakes, bars and supplements are ok, but don't discount getting a large portion of your protein intake from good ole food. I still eat string cheese everyday! Acme brand is good and contains 8 grams of protein in one serving, which is a nicely wrapped, portable, perfectly portioned ounce. Most convenience stores sell these individually as well if you're out and about and want something quick. I also like Q-Smart bars from Quaker and the peanut butter flavor bars from Carbwell. Good for throwing in your purse. Remember the puree stage doesn't have to be boring either. I ate lot's of really good food during that time and most items I carried over into the other stages and still enjoy on a regular basis. Pre-cooked shrimp from the grocery store has 18 grams of protein in 3 ounces! Use your imagination and you will find lots of good stuff. Linda

Hello Cassandra, To tell the truth I don't recommend trying the bars or shakes or drinks until after the surgery. As everyone says your taste buds will change even more then once. Whoever I was like you and tried a few. I am just over 2 months out and have not tried the bars due to they are so dense and don't go down right. I started drinking the Isopures and they were nasty tasting to me. I have my follow up with the nutritionist and told her how I like to chocolate carb counts milk and how I used unflavored unjury ( protein powder ) and she said then don't do the Isopures. I was so glad. No I drink 3 glasses of it. One morning, afternoon and at bed time. I especially like it warmed up. Hope this helps, Cynthia P
