Hello all, I am 17 days post op. I am on the mooshy food stuff. I am having a problem taking my iron pills. I have to open them up and put them into my food. The last several attempts I have actually spit it back up, so I don't count this as dumping since I was not able to swallow. Does anyone have any ideas or new forms of taking iron pills. When am I able to try swallowing hole again???? ps What is the deal with lunchmeats- are they ok or not?? Thanks for all the advice. Cynthia p

Hi Cynthia, I don't take a separate iron pill, after discussing it with the nutritionist and the nurse practitioner, we decided that the Flinstones Complete was enough for me ( taking 3 of them a day gives me aproximately the same amount of elemental iron as in a separate suplement ) So far at 7 months out my iron levels have been good. Not sure if this might be an option for you as we are all different in how we process vitamins. I am still of menstruating age ( oh joy lol ) but as I said no iron issues to date. I also eat quite a bit of beef so I'm sure that helps too. As far as swallowing whole pills, the most recent school of thought is that they would rather us not. Some of us do with no problems. I swallow vitamin E, zinc and Colace with no problems. Your mileage may vary. I eat lunchmeats from the deli all the time...roast beef, ham, whatever and have no problems at all. Some might find excess sodium to be an issue but other than that they are a good source of protein, usually easy on the tummy and VERY convenient when you're out. Linda

Cyndi, Good luck with the iron. I heard it is not too tasty. Since I'm post menapausal this is one thing I don't have to do. YIPPEE!!!! I make rool-ups, a piece of lean luchmeat (usually turkey, sometimes ham) and roll it in a piece of cheese. No bread or roll. Maybe a small bit of mayo or mustard for flavor. I also take 1 to 2 slices of corned beef and put it in my chopper with a 2/3 tablespoons of thousand island dressing and a small bit of cole slaw. Chop it well. Corned beef special spread. MMMMM my favorite. I still eat it this way. Still do without the bread too. I think some girls take a liquid iron. Not sure how it is though. Hopefully someone will answer that has had success or other ideas. Elissa

The Vitamin Shoppe has chewable iron that is berry-flavored. I think it tastes good and it goes down easy. Betsy

I was taking liquid iron, but it turned my teeth greenish-black so I stopped and I swallow the tiny little pill (against medical advice). I may try the chewable. Wondering how that is on the teeth?
