Interesting BMI

I was watching Tony Little and he was talking about BMI's not always telling the whole story. While they can be a good gauge of your progress please remember that it's only ONE tool and many other things can be factored into the " how fat are you" equasion. He is probably one of the fittest ment I have ever seen and yet if you go exclusively by BMI readings he is considered obese! He isn't very tall and weights 200 pounds, but that's 200 pounds of muscle on the guy, no way is he obese. By all means use those calculators as part of your tool kit for weight loss, but remember to take your individual body, your build etc into account when using those readings. They may not be giving you a complete picture. Hope everyone has a great rest of the week, Linda

I was always told go by the percentage of body fat, Because It takes into account what your body frame size you have small, med or large. Someone with a large body frame would have bigger bones than a small framed individual, which would increase weight from bone. I remember that If you wrist is larger than 7.5 inches that you are considered large framed.(most people think they are larged framed). If I remember correctly body fat % for men should be 10-18%, and women should be 15-20%( women have a extra fat layer below the skin- for use when having babies). If you get a body fat percentage of 10% you no longer float in water, you sink like a rock!

Charles, Funny you posted about the large frame ... I told someone a while back that now that I have lost some weight and my ring finger is a 4.5 ... I can no longer claim big bones as the reason for the extra weight. However, I used to try to get by with it ... don't think anyone will fall for it these days though!!! About the 10% fat and sinking ... ummmmm not real sure about that. When we went away this past summer, I jumped into the pool and sunk straight to the bottom ... honestly, it scared me for a bit. I had been so used to floating all these years and never even gave it a second thought ... and there I was struggling to hit the top. And then to stay there took a lot of work!!!! GEESH, I sure with I could claim that I am only 10% fat though ... it would be an wonderful replacement for the big bone theory I had for so long ... Have a great day Charles ... wonderful information, thanks!!! Hugs, Tammy

I was talking with one of the exercise physiologist about these, he pointed out which weighs more A ton on bricks or a ton of toilet paper,The answer is they both weight the same, but the bricks take up only a 1/2 pallet but the toilet paper fills a tractor trailer. So that Lean body mass is the way to go, I was pretty right on about the body fat percentages, The physiologist said It can be adjusted for age. ditto's to you to T.T.
