Does SlimFast count as a "protein" drink?
Hi Cassandra,
Be careful using products like this because all are not created equal. The original SlimFast drink has 10 grams of protein BUT has a whopping 35 grams of sugar. More than enough to send you on a run to the potty. The nutritionists have suggested keeping sugar grams under 6 per serving.
The SlimFast Low carb version of shake has 20 grams of protein and 1 gram of sugar. A Much better choice. I tried them and found them to be a bi****ery tasting. That's just me tho, many people like them. Bottom line is to read those labels and check for sugar!
Also remember what you like now, you may not care for later. Most people's taste buds do somewhat of an about face after surgery and it takes awhile to get it together. Trying new things is always a good idea providing the nutrition stats are good and not getting too much of one thing, since you may hate it a month later when you're post-op. Makes it easier on the ole' pocketbook lol.
Right now I'm using EAS AdvantEdge High Performance Whey Protein in chocolate flavor. I get it at BJ's ( about 12.00 for a 2 cannister pack ) or at Eckerds on sale for $5.50. I like it because it has a milder flavor and isn't so "in your face" One scoop is 120 calories, 2 grams of fat, 20 grams of protein, 120 mg calcium 4 grams sugar. I mix it with carb Countdown 2% milk and and up with a 12 oz shake that has aproximately 38 grams of protein and that extra calcium boost.
I also get the Zero Carb Isopure fruit flavored drinks. Some love them, some hate them. You can get these at GNC or at Dr's office. ( cheaper by .75 cents a bottle at the docs. Each 20 oz bottle has 40 grams of protein in it! I like it over ice and use it as a drink, not as a meal.
Bottom line, check those labels! Have a great day.
Linda
I seem to remember that the last can of slimfast low carb I picked up had 9 gms of fat. At any rate it was more than I could in my protein shakes, so I didn't get them. I also seem to remember something about the source of the protein not being something that would be all that bio-available to bypass patients? I opt for whey protein and I don't think that was the main source of the slimfast? I could be wrong, as I am only going by memory. But I think the main source was casein? Anyway, take what I say with a grain of salt ... not an expert here. Only sharing what I use and don't use and why.
