Hello everyone: I have a question concerning whether or not diet sodas are harmful after GBS. I have been drinking no more than 2 a day and they don't really bother me but other people have told me they heard in the meetings that they are a definite no no because they stretch your pouch. Just wanting some other opinons before I decide to give them up. Thanks!

Anne, The doctors reccommend no carbonation. The diet soda is fine as long as it is flat. Take care, Renay

Our doctors say no to the diest sodas but I do drink them over ice. I drink diet mountain dew - 2x wammy becasue of the caffenine too. Best to avoid them all together if you can. The only things I like are crystal light sunrise, water & some propels.

I was the diet pepsi queen pre-op. I tried one sip at about 3 months out and spit it out. Nastiest stuff on the planet. My taste for it has completely disappeared.

Anne, I used to love diet gingerale & diet pepsi. Other than 1 small sip after an EGD, I have not had any. The food police caught me and yelled. I totally forgot about the straw and the soda. Saved by the bell. I really don't miss them at all. It just doesn't taste the same. Besides according to the Doc's it isn't good for you at all. I stick with water, crystal lite and skim milk, in that order. Elissa

Anne, If Linda was the queen, than I was definitely the king of diet sodas prior to my surgery 11 months ago. I quit them cold turkey and have never looked back or tried them again. In my heyday I would probably drink between 6-8 Diet Cokes a day. CocaCola stock actually dipped from their loss of my revenue. There is a lot of opinions out there, but CHRIAS tells you not to have carbonated beverages at all. There are also a lot of studies out there that state that there is no such thing as a flat soda, since your own body heat can reignite the carbonation. Not sure what is true. This may be an urban legend but I'm sure that there are other chemicals in the soda which stimulate the hunger mechanism (ie. 51 years of experience with sodas and weight gain). Actually I figured it was easier just to make the total withdrawal and find alternatives, like water and crystal lite. Everyone needs to find what works for them. Good luck, just remember there is life after soda, M&Ms, etc. Rob

Anne, I was told something that made me change my ways with sodas. They say our new pouches will make our stomach lining become thinner. Our pouchs at first will only hold one to 2 ounces. When all is said and done our pouches will hold up to 6 to 8 ounces. This will cause the thinning. After thinking about our pouches, think about what soda can do when poured on a battery terminal that is corroded. This is what they used to use in the old days to clean the terminals. Soda's not for me anymore.

Thanks to all of you *****sponded concerning y "diet Soda" dilemma. I never really thought about what that stuff can do to your pouch but you have made a believer out of me. I am going to have to go cold turkey and try to survive best I can. I guess crystal lite and I will become best friends. Besides, every time I drank a soda, I had terrible gas. I will be doing the world a favor. Thanks again everyone.. You are awesome!!!! Anne

Diet soda can still to be enjoyed, but like our "new life is a life of moderation"-- small quantities are ok, Ie. less than 1cup a day.Two thoughts. The caffiene is bad, for absorption of vitamins, but can keep you alert.- take 2- 3 hours after taking any vitamins. Diet Root beer and Diet ginger ale have no or little caffiene. Endocrineologist have studied the aspartame or nutrasweet in soda( and other things) is more addictive than sugar! If you must continue to have soda, pour the soda into a plastic pitcher, leave set in fridge over night, then pour into another pitcher the following day and wait 6 more hours, then pour back in the original bottle.-- this disapates the carbon dioxide gas in soda. You can create a Protein shake using Root beer to imitate a rootbeer float or an orange flavorshake using the diet sunkist.--contact Julie Walenta,Dietician At PMRI for reciepe details.
