Hi everyone Does anyone have Aetna as their insurance carrier? I am going to my primary doctor tomorrow morning to try to sort out all of their requirements for the surgery. The paperwork I received from them says 6 months of diet and exercise monitered by a doctor. Is this regardless of other health issues a person could have? Rose

Rose, I have Aetna. My primary had to write a note that I'd been on supervised diets, wellbutrin, Phen-phen & Weigh****cher's. I also wrote a letter after my 1st denial stating my diet and exercise attempts. I have posted it within my profile. Since my profile is kinda lengthy, it was around the end of December time frame. I was passed after the 1st appeal. I also had co-morbities of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and sleep apnea. My BMI was over 60, I'm 5'3" tall and weighed 346 lbs. Aetna might be a little stringent, but I am pleased that I have had very little out of pocket expenses. All toll the co-pays including Dr's, PMRI and hospital have been around $800.00. That covered pre-op, post-op, nutritionist, phyc evaluation, cardiologist, pulminologist, EGD & hospital. Hopefully your Primary Dr. has documentation he can supply for you stating your diet attempts. Good luck. Elissa

I made my appt with Dr I's office while I was recovering from my second knee surgery Sept 2003. Got an appt. for May 2004. I have Aetna and did not have any problems. I was approved on the first letter. I have had 2 knee surgeries and have tried in the past to lose weight through supervised programs (including Dr prescribed medications). Yes, your PCP has to submit all the information that you have tried. My knee surgeon suggested this to me last year. And now within the last couple of months (last month exactly) I have been told I have arthritis in my foot. What I did do was have all my multiple Dr's, the weight dr, arthritis, knee surgeon all supply me with a letter stating they agreed that I am a candidate. I gave them to my PCP and mailed a copy of them myself to Aetna. On the Aetna website, it says you should loose up to 10% (if I remember correctly) of your current weight before hand but I am not sure if that is necessary if you have medical problems. No one at Dr I's office told me I had to lose any weight before hand. When I saw Dr Iragau I weighed in at 370/377, I am 5'9" and my BMI was 56. After seeing that pink paper that says if you gain weight before the surgery it will be canceled I tried to maintain and/or lose on my own. It is so hard as we all know. That was since May 7th, I have lost some but not enough to help my knees. I would check with the Dr's office too. Submit as much information to Aetna as possible. This far, I have had very liitte out of pocket expense too. I hope this helps. MotherLove
