Well Cathy-I am along with Kathy the biggest diet soda drinkers, even after gastric bypass surgery. Brett was talking about how the carbonation of the soda causes the new pouch to stretch, which in turns let you eat more which in turns (eventually) will let you eat more and when you are 19 months post-op like me---You gain weight. Then at one other meeting the dietician had said something that the carbonation can cause cancer of the esophagus. So I decided that I was going to die someway some how, but I was going to continue to drink my diet soda. BUT I didn't know what Brett said about it stretching the pouch. SO I have been cutting back to one a day for at least a month plus, now I am thinking of cutting back more..if not stop all together. I hope this makes sense. Nicki

I was a HUGE diet soda drinker, too. I have been jonesin' for a diet coke with lime! While I don't want to make soda a habit, my nutritionist stated that we (wls patients) are allowed to servings of caffeine per day and it would be ok to stir the bubbles out. I know, I'm thinking what's the point if you take the bubbles out. I was thinking after pouchie heals a little more, that every so often I would treat myself to one. Maybe after each 10lb loss or so and if I am really good, maybe I'll stir half the bubbles out! lol Dianne

Dianne, Hiya! When I went to the Gastric Bypass cooking class at PMRI, they used a diet orange soda in a shake recipe. The nutritionist just said to leave it open and out until it goes flat. I think a diet Coke with lime sounds great -- is that new?!? I know we are both newbies to the surgery but I am going to the nutritionist this week and I will reconfirm that we can use flat soda. TAKE CARE!

Cathy, I had my surgery done at PA Hospital but attended this meeting and was surprised at all the restrictions. I was told after six months I could revisit diet soda again if I wanted to....Also we could drink beer and wine after a year out. When I listen to Brett state all the restrictions I was shocked but he backed up these statements with reasons why you shouldn't. It was good to hear but I am of course still on the fence. I miss my martini's and thought if I only had to give it up a year I could survive....but forever is a long time. I so wished that all the doctors could standardize the requirements. It would make life much easier.

Thanks for filling me in.I guess I'll have to cut back on the Diet pepsi.I usually have a 4oz can a day over ice to minimize the bubbles. Thanks Cathy
