Yes. Another question. During the Open RNY, the literature mentions that the surgeon may remove the patient's gall bladder "if necessary." Didi anyone have to have their gall bladder removed? If so, did they have to switch from Lap to Open in order to do it? Are there any negative side effects of having your gall baldder removed?

Nope, still have my gallbladder, hopefully forever. Postops.. remember the dreaded Actigall??? LOL.. preops.. it's very important to take it, it reduces your risk of gall bladder disease down the road by like 10%. T

I still have mine too and like Tina and hoping to keep it....I've become a bit attached to mine ..lol ok annnyway..I asked Brett at one of my pre-op appointments why some surgeons remove them and some don't he told me that they choose not to because if you have a complication from your surgery they really don't want to have to sit and guess which procedure might be the culprit. They basically go in and do what they have to do to complete your surgery and nothing more. Linda

Dr I, left mine intact and everything seems to be going all right. I was one of the lucky/unlucky ones ... I was pretty allergic to the actigall and had to be taken off of it ... so while I didn't mind not having to take it, I was a bit concerned that I may end up back in surgery with a bad gallbladder. So far so good on that though. I always thought that a doc would only remove it with another abdominal surgery was if he had reason to believe it may cause problems???

Cassandra, I had mine removed just in time....It was a two for one procedure! I was scheduled as an OPEN so it was easy for him to do both. I had stones since January....pains were there and I had to watch what I eat. I feel good now. No pain. I have had no side effects from the departed gall bladder. If you have stones...get rid of it! One scar is enough for me. Debbie

Mine was bad pre WLS and we were hoping that the changes in digestion and the actigall may change my cir****tances and I'd be okay keeping mine. However - I had to have mine removed 7 months post op. I was also pregnant which can aggrevate a GB. Basically Dr. Wynn & I. have kept a lot of people from having the gallbladder issues that you sometimes read abotu WLS patients getting because they proactively prescribe Actigall for 6 months post op during your most rapid weight loss. Many of the folks you see needing a GB removal post op were never on the actigall to help control gallstones during the period of time when they were losing so rapidly. Doesn't mean 100% that you won't have to have it removed but it was not really a big deal (the removal surgery itself). The problem is the gallbladder attack that happens prior to the surgery...that hurts like hell.
