The reality of Dumping

Hi! I've seen messages on Yahoo concerning dumping. Some folks seem to dump "immediately" - without having time to find a bathroom. One woman dumps so quickly and frequently that she carries a jar with her (just in case). Ick! Is this the reality of dumping? Does the urge to vomit hit so quickly that you can't get to a restroom in time? Please let this scared pre-op know the real scoop about dumping. Thanks!

I've never had it hit so quickly that I couldn't get to a restroom. I don't react to much anyway, but one time, I drank water too fast, too much, and within 10 min, I was in the ladies room. But yet Crispy Creams don't bother me. LOL. If I do get bothered by something, it's ususally an " arrrgghhh" moaning, yucky kind of feeling, where pouchie hurts and just feel like crap for about an hour. Hope you don't react too badly either. Best of luck.

Hi Cassandra, Dumping is usually described as having symptoms like sweating, racing heart, nausea etc not necesarily vomiting but more like diarhea..lol so I wonder what she uses the jar for. Ok, that was disgusting , I just can't help myself sometimes I have had vomiting from a food that doesn't sit well at times, so I do usually have a ziplock bag in my purse but have rarely had to use it. The only thing I have found that makes me want to truely has been Hamburger Helper, tuna fish and one of the butter sprays that comes in flavors, it was a garlic herb blend of I can't Believe It's Not Butter spray. Dumping affects everyone a bit differently, I dump if i eat something with too much fat in it and I get VERY sleepy very quickly and have had to lay down and sleep it off. There is really no way to know how we will react to any given food other than trial and error and even then things can change as time goes on. My advice would be to stay with your food plan as much as you can, save being experimental for when you are in an environment you feel comfortable in and stick with safer food choices when eating out early on...soup etc. Hopefully you won't have any embarrassing need for a jar! Hi Cassandra, I just wanted to respond. I am one of those who have yet to dump or get sick. I don't try too many things, however my grandmother made some home made ice cream a a few weeks ago and I did eat 1/4c of it. I was prepared to dump (it's just that good) but I did not. That's not saying that it won't happen to me if I were to try it again. I guess what I am saying is everyone is different and everyone's experiences will be different. ~Shelly

Hi! When I "dump" Its more like an uuuuugh yuk...I feel very very nauseous and my heart races and I feel like total crap for about 30 minutes to an hour. Then I get super super sleepy...then its done and over with. If I eat WAY too fast I sometimes need to go and um..."release" it? but its not an ... oh my gosh Im gonna RIGHT NOW...type of feeling. I have enough time to get there Thank goodness!! I guess everyone is different. But thats my personal experience thus far. Best of luck! Elizabeth M

I pretty much have two kinds of "dumping" The first one is when I eat too fast, too much, don't chew well enough or something just does not sit well for whatever reason. With this comes some warning ... sometimes my nose starts running, I start sneezing, and/or I burp. Then my tummy starts getting sick and when I start "foaming" then I know I am in for the long haul. It almost always ends in vomiting and then I feel better. I did have one time that I kept my head in a bag (vomiting) for about 25 minutes traveling down 95 ... not fun at all. I have always had plenty of warning with this kind before I vomit. The second thing that happens to me I think is classified as true dumping ... When I eat something that hits my intestines too fast ... this has happened to me with sugar, carbs, even a couple of protein shakes before. I have not had problems with fats. I did have a time for a couple of weeks that everything I ate, I dumped at least mildly on. This happened to me when I was having some problems with a tooth ache and was not able to eat, and was even having problems drinking. As soon as I was able to start to eat and drink again I started having dumping issues. I think I have figured out that if my pouch gets too empty ... I am more likely to dump. Anyway these symptoms for me include ... a rapid pulse, (in my throat), sweating, dizziness, undeniable need to sit down or preferable lay down. This is an awful feeling of absolute yuckyness ... I usually feel nauseous, but don't recall ever really vomiting in this situation. When I had my worst occurrences, I did have diarrhea with it though. After a little while, I simply feel spent, beat up ... like I crash ... totally tired. After a bit of rest, it was as if nothing had happened. Not much warning for me in this situation, need to find a bathroom/bed/or chair (depending on my symptoms) ... fast!!! I rarely deal with this now (thank goodness) but even today, I was in BJ's and had very little on my tummy and for whatever reason I decided to sample of their coconut macaroons (can we say STUPID) ... two bites and I was gone ... right in the middle of the store. Luckily, it was mild and I only got dizzy and nauseous. Held tight on the cart ... It passed within a few minutes and I was on my way again. The worst part for me was ... the sugar grams was only 10 gms for two cookies and I only had a couple of bites of one cookie ... soooooooo, you really never really know. A bit of good news for you though, the vomiting after surgery was nothing like pre-op vomiting (at least for me). I no longer have that wretching and pain and forceful stuff ... mine now is, gentle and easy on me. One of the perks I guess??? At any rate ... it was something that concerned me when I was pre-op also, but was very glad when I found out that it was something that I could deal with!!

I've never not made it to the bathroom. I have never had the diareaha kind of dumping but a few times milk or sugars have caused it. True dumping can vary from person to person. For me - I tend to throw up several times a week - I do not attribute this to dumping - rather just eating too much and also for me I think some of my vomiting is thanks to little Amber Wynn moving a certain way and pressing up on my already small and sometimes full pouch. Back to dumping ... I can tolerate sugar, sometimes and sometimes it will bother me. Milk and ice cream products can be a crap shoot. Usually, these are the things that will give me what I consider a true sense of dumping - sometimes something else will cause it but it is random & rare. What happens is I start to feel a bit nausous, I will get a little clammy, heart may race, will feel the need to throw up several times & will need to lay down for a bit. But that lady that needs to carry a jar - while it may be rare and may be something she could change by changing her diet or talking to her doctor - it could happen, but I think more often then not it is not the case. Nausea in general - I have a wonderful little secret thanks to HEAVY morning sickness for several months... Zofran.... it will make me feel 100% within 20 minutes or so. It is a prescription medicine used for chemo patients mainly but others with bad nausea too. If you suffer from it ask your doctor to write a script for that & give it a try - so far it has been a life saver.
