What if you dont't have co-morbidities and you're just overweight?
OK. I'm struggling with the decision to have the surgery. I'm still going through all the clearances that Dr. Irgau requires but, having sat through some of the PMRI support group meetings, I've developed a growing concern.
Other than being overweight, I am healthy - no diabetes, no high blood pressure, no heart disease, no joint pain and no high cholesterol. My only complaint, besides my weight, is depression which started at the same time I started gaining weight. I'm weighing my current good health against the potential complications of the suregry - and I'm scared.
Although my PCP & Dr. Irgau think I'm a good candidate for the surgery because of my size, they both admitted that I don't have the common co-morbidities.
Has anyone in DE/PA opted to have the surgery, even if there was nothing else wrong with their health? Your feedback is greatly appreciated!
Hi,
Without getting too deep on you, let me say that only you can make the decision to have wls. From how I understand it, the requirements for wls is 100# overweight and /or comorbidities associated. This means that if you are 90 # overweight but have a list of health concerns, you qualify, the same goes for if you are 100# over, but no health concerns, you qualify. Being MO, the health problems most likely will occur over time if the weight does not change. One good thing, is that if you are as healthy as you can be except for the weight, the complication possibilities are decreased if you have surgery. Best of luck to you and your decision making. The group on here and at PMRI are the best for questions and support. Take care!
Well Cassandra I know what your asking...... And yes I have a friend with obesity and co-morbidites whom had the surgery. But I think begin OBESE is a cause within it's self personally. You may not have problems at the current time....but trust me if you keep the weight on you WILL. At some point co-morbidities goes along with the terriorty. Once, again the decision is what you want to do with your HEALTH.
Posting here and going to meetings and lifeskills class are great research tools. Ultimately you must decide what is best for you. I believe that everyone is concerned about the risks, it's unrealistic not to. You have to decide what is best and it seems you are taking all the right actions. Good luck in your journey.
