Pulmonologist question

Hi Everyone, I'm hoping to have an RNY at the Barix Clinic in PA. I thought I had finished all my preop tests required by the surgeon (cardiology, sleep study, and psychology) only to find out yesterday that BSBC now wants me to see a pulmonologist before they will give approval. I just switched to BSBC (PPO) as of 7-1-04, so I suppose I should be pleased that they are even considering approving my surgery, but I was wondering if anyone knows if a pulmonary consult is something that BSBC routinely requires for all WLS candidates? Since I already had the sleep apnea study, it seems a bit redundant if that is the main thing they are looking for. The first appointment I could get with a pulmonologist is Aug. 16, adding another month (at least) of waiting, which is frustrating. Thanks, Martha

Martha, I have BC/BS PPO (in PA) and I needed to see a pulminologist too, in addition to the sleep study. A lot of times it depends on your surgeon's requirements and your own health history. I have allergies and asthma. I had to go -- even though I had the sleep study, a PFT, full exam, etc just months before>>>but good news>>>>>it was just to have a pulminologist affiliated with the hospital go over the test results and sign off on them. No additional or repeat tests! I hope it's like that for you. GOOD LUCK. Kit

Usually the pulmonologist orders the sleep study. But since you've already had that done, it shouldn't hold you up too long. Did you call them all or are you bound by insurance to only one? Keep calling to ask about cancellations, maybe that will help. Good luck.
