Hi all, Has anyone ever tried the unflavored soy protein powder from Trader Joes? I got it last week because I cannot stomach the flavored kinds (chocolate, vanilla) and I thought this might do the trick. Any ideas on what I can mix it with (foods, drinks)? Right now, whatever I am making is a gloppy mess. I used two scoops like the can says, is that too much? HELP! THANKS A BUNCH, Kit

Hi Kitty, I have never tried the TJ's brand of unflavored. The soy based ones I have tried usually have a bad after taste to me so I tend to stick with www.unjury.com , it's been the best by far for me. As far as mixing goes, add it to soup, hot cereal etc. Adding too much or too little really depends on your personal taste and what you like. Add some into a pitcher of Crystal Light or Sugar Free Tang, it makes it very orange juice like. In my beginning puree stage I added the Unjury to everything I ate. Blended beef stew, chili, soups. It does change the texture of food somewhat so experiment with amounts till you find what you like. Soups you can always add more broth. It's pretty much trial and error. I'm sure with some experimentation you will hit on the combination that works for you. Seriously consider adding it ti a pitcher of drinks, it does double duty that way. You get in your fluids plus the added protein boost. A pretty funny side note on that...Elissa is the one who originally showed me that Unjury was good in Crystal Light Orange. I was a brand new post op and really in super duper protein mode. I didn't realize she was adding it to a PITCHER of the stuff...I added a full scoop to a glass. LOL oh you should have seen me trying to choke that down. Linda

One tip. Never, never nuke your food with Unjury in it. Always add Unjury after you have heated the food. It congeals.

LOL glad you pointed that out. I remember doing that with beef stew once and it came out looking like a brownie!

Thanks Rob, My Tip: the soy powder congeals too if you nuke it! YUMMY? YUCK! I hope someday I can look back on all this angst I am having prior to surgery and LAUGH. It's not fear of pain, or recuperation, or even complications but a GREAT fear that I will mess up with the food (not make the right choices, eat only one or two things over and over and get bored, etc.) -- and somehow NOT lose weight. I guess I am still stuck on that diet merry-go-round and won't know the full effects of the surgery until I can experience them myself. I see all of you posties at the support group and KNOW it works. You are all so amazing. I'm hoping I gain the willpower and control you all have -- because I know I don't have it yet!

Thanks Linda, I thought the aftertaste was just me! I am going to have to try the Unjury. Is on-line the best place to get it? I also appreciate your suggestions of food/drinks to add protein powder to! I can share a "funny" too. I have that super duper protein mentality too, I keep thinking I need to add as much as I can of it to my diet after surgery. (which I know is true!) Anyhow, I've been adding scoops (like 2) of the soy stuff to individual sized servings of food and drink. Talk about glop and goop! Choking down IS the word for it! Kit

I haven't tried the trader Joe's powder, but I'll back up what Linda said about UNJURY. It is awesome! any flavor Crystal light with some unjury is good (by my taste). I also added it to EVERYTHING during my pureed stage. I think that it does change the taste a little, but not much. Ken

THANK YOU KEN, I am pleased to see that Unjury is the big favorite. And also that Crystal Light is OK after surgery. It's the one good habit I have pre-surgery. I love to drink it now. I am also pleased to see tips on pureed food. That'll be my life shortly (in August anyway!) and I was poking around with making up menus and wondering how the heck I was going to get enough protein down! Thanks for the tips! Kit

Kit, I tried and then thew out the TJs unflavored. I use the Resource Beneprotein that one of the students in my lifeskills class ordered by the case. I like it with 1 cup milk, a banana, and 2 scoops of the powder (the scoops are small) I put it in the blender with 5 ice cubes and I have a yummy smoothie. Kathleen

Hi Kathleen, I have seen that kind but never tried it. What is the protein count on that? Thanks, Linda
