Ok I feel like my brains fell out. lol I'm in " I should know this" mode after all we have learned in classes, support meetings etc. Please bear with me during pre-op omg I forget everything I have learned syndrome! I forget the reason we aren't supposed to use a straw. I'm a straw sipper and do better getting my liquids in that way ( cold sometimes bothers my teeth ) Did or do any of you use a straw anyway? Thanks in advance, Madam Mush For Brains

Dear Mush I believe straws draw in too much air. I too was a straw user, but have adapted well to not using one. Don't make your drinks too cold if it bothers you. I just hate that drinking from the glass takes off all my lipstick lol... oh btw.. if you think you are brain mushy now.. just wait until you get the mind eraser drugs in the hospital!!! Right Elissa??? Haha You'll do great, don't worry.

I use a straw whenever I want. It does have to do with air getting in your tummy as Tina said. What can happen to some people is they take in more air & fluid then their pouch can hold & it comes back up. I can drink really well, several big gulps at a time. So it may boil down to how you can judge the intake of the combination. Like I said, I do fine and my dietician knows I use a straw. I think I was 6-8 weeks out when I started using one again.

Dear Madam Mush, . Boy you have done it now. Given us amunition. As Tina said, the mind eraser drugs will kick in now and forever more. I too drank from a straw. It really creates a lot of air bubbles in and burping going out. Yesterday after the EGD, the nice nurse said "Would you like anything to drink? I said Gosh yes, it's been over 14 hrs since I had anything wet. I asked if she had diet gingerale. She handed me a short can with a straw in it. I took 2 sips and the Food Police, Nazi Charlie (my hubby) said I couldn't have it. I forgot. But he was right and I gave it up so he drank the rest. All I tasted was bubbles and carbonation (BOTH NO NO's) But I will savor those 2 sips forever. Don't worry everything you thought you knew, you'll need Sam or us to help you remember. LOL ((HUGS)) Elissa

I drink w/a straw all the time, just take little sips until you get use to it.This is the only way I can get protein drinks down.It doesn't harm the pouch but if you get to greedy it will cause discomfort. Cathy

Ditto Linda and Elissa, I'm still from the old school. So I have tried to stick with the dietician and doctors's directions. If they say no straw, I use no straw. Just because something works doesn't mean we should do it. Otherwise I'd probably be experimenting with how my body responds to sweets, instead of trying to fabricate protein drinks out of all these flavored syrups. I always used a straw prior to surgery. Now I make my smoothies extra thick so a straw wouldn't be very useful anyway. By the way cold drinks actually burn more calories, since the body has to heat up the liquid as it is digested.
