Hi Everyone, I have a question for the post-ops Are you finding that you are extremely thirsty? I am someone who drinks all day and always have the more thirsty feeling. I know when I get my surgery the hardest thing for me will be not to drink when I eat. I read that article in the inquire (thanks for that link!) and was nervous when I read that extreme thirst was a side effect... do you find that to be true? and how much can you drink at one time? Thanks Elizabeth M

Hi Elizabeth, I don't have an answer to your particular question but I'd like to ask if you have ever been tested for diabetes? Thirst is a common symptom. I'm a diabetic and suffer with thirst when my numbers are high. Linda

Hi Elizabeth, As a pre-op, I was thirsty all the time too (and no, I don't have diabetes), I find this is hard as a post op. I can't get enough. I've gone from taking baby sips (post op), to an actual swallow, and this helps a bit. But I'm not sure if I should be taking real swallows anyway anyone else? Tina

Hey Elizabeth, I am 4-month post-op (guess that almost makes me a vet). I'm drinking 12-20oz of water (or Crystal lite) at each sitting (usually over a 1/2 to hour period). That is not a struggle at all. The only time I am extremely thirsty is first thing in the morning, but that is more than likely from the CPAP I use. Not having liquids at meals is not that tough. Just make sure you don't have liquids on the table when your having your meal. Your bites are so small you don't have to wash down the contents like before the surgery. Rob

Elizabeth, I am not diabetic. I drank a lot pre WLS. I am trying to drink a lot now too slowly sipping each little bit. I used to be a gulper. I am especially thirsty during the nite and in the AM. I keep water by my bed. One of the reasons is that you are eating and drinking mostly protein. You have a bad taste in your mouth from your body ketose-ing(sp). Loosing the FAT. Nothing seems to quench that dry feeling in your mouth. I have found a sugar free cough lozenger that I suck on. It is lemon and seems to get rid of the dryness in my mouth and is satisfing also. Good luck. Hope the time will pass quickly for you. Elissa

Thanks everyone for the replies. I have been tested for diabetes and I am all clear. My sugar is a bit high but I dont have the disease. I'm a gulper too! yeah that will change I'm getting nervous because of the large bites that I take and the big gulps of water. I've sat here before and tried taking smaller sips and tiny bites and chew chew, but when you dont have that full feeling your hunger gets ahold of ya and you just chomp! I guess I will have to be extra sure that I drink drink drink all day. thanks again everyone Elizabeth M
