vitamin d deficiency

I just discoverd that I have a vitamin D deficiency.....and that this is very common now adays with people who have had gastric bypass surgery.

I was having trouble with my bones.  Had knee replacement, back surgery and was diagnosed with ostepenia.  My family doctor suggested we find out why my bones were breaking and had me go for a simple blood test.  It came back that I was vitamin D deficient.

Now I am taking 2000 IU of vitamin D a day.  The vitamin is over the counter and is small...so it is easy to swallow.

Also...I am finding out that many of my friends who have not had gastric bypass are being diagnosed with this deficiency.  I think this is happening because we use sun screen to prevent the harmful rays from the sun.....and this is where we get our vitamin D.

Foods high in vitamin D are mushrooms and tuna fish.

Just wanted to pass this info along.....better safe now than sorry later.

I also found out that I was vitamin D deficient two blood tests ago. I was not having any bone problems or anything, but the deficiency showed up in my normal blood test.  Since I take the 2000 IU supplement everything is back to normal.    It's amazing all the things we need to watch.  Thank goodness, my PCP is always right on top of keeping me healthy.

Thanks for posting this information.  Always err on the safe side.

Thanks so much for the above info, Rosey.   I haven't had any blood work done yet.  I go for my 6 month check up in July so I imagine that's when Dr. Peters will send me for labs.

I saw my spine surgeon yesterday....and found out that he also had a vitamin D deficiency.   I learned from him that you cannot overdose on Vitamin D.  He told me that he was taking 5000 IU a day.

Years ago, the doctors tested everyone for this deficiency.....they got away from it when everyone's levels were normal.  Now they are seeing lots of this deficiency.

Since I started taking the vitamin D....my hair is starting to come back thicker.

I take 50,000 IU of dry D a day. You will not OD on it. If you are at all deficient, you should up your dosage and get rechecked. Also, look at you PTH and calcium, as these three things go hand in hand with boneloss.
