Two people, same surgery. Both with complications??

I'm planning on having the RNY in the future. I've done my research & I feel it's right for me.

But, I know two people that have had the surgery & both have had complications.

My uncle had the surgery in 2005 & within 2 weeks, he had a knot in his bowel. If he would have been a few minutes more getting to the hospital, he would have died. He didn't take very good care of himself during the two weeks though, so I thought it was just him.

My best friend had RNY surgery on Feb. 23rd, so just about 2 weeks ago. He was doing really good. Eating exactly what he was supposed to & taking his meds correctly. I was at his house on Tuesday & he had already lost 12 pounds. But last night, his Mom calls he panicking saying that they took him to the hospital. I asked her what happen & she said that my friend said he had diarrhea all day, then he stood up one time & got really light headed, she said his face was white as a ghost. He said he went to go take a shower & when he came out, there was blood everywhere (he said he was pooping blood). His mom immediately called 911 & they took him to the hospital & admitted him. He said he doesn't feel bad, he just has to run to the bathroom every 5 minutes. He's now in his room but won't talk to anyone, so nobody knows what's wrong with him. Does this sound familiar to anyone?? Any ideas what could have happened?

I'm obviously rethinking my decision, even though I still want to get the surgery. Anyone have any insight about this?

Hey there

I had my surgery on August 10th. I had to stay in the hospital an extra day because my BMs were pure blood. It ended up just being residual blood from the surgery. Everything was fine.

One month after surgery I started having abdomenal pain. Several catscans and ER trips later Dr. Irgau did an emergency surgery to discover what the pain was from. Since all my tests came back normal. Come to find out I had an adhesion and internal hernia.

Even with those two issues this has been the best decision I have ever made. At 7 months post op I've lost 111lbs and feel amazing.

All things come with risks, but if you ask me the risks are slim and the rewards are many.

it could be non surgery related gi bleed but who knows for sure.  He sion a hospital and they can get him the care he needs he is in good hands just keep thinking of him he will snap back eventually.  I had rny almost 2 years ago i have had no complications i do what im told most of the time but i do eat things i shouldnt  here and there, sometimes i suffer because of it but mostly i dont.  I think this has beent he best decision of my life. You need to make that decision for you...your are the one who will have to live with the consequences both good and bad of any decision you make. I wish you luck !!!!
