Fish oil softgels
Hi everyone!!! How is everyone doing??? I've been reading all about the benefits of fish oil (Omega 3's), and was wondering if any postops (3 years out or more) take them? They're huge capsules, can we take them? What effect does it have on blood sugar levels? I just started this year having issues with low blood sugar. How times have changed - before WLS I was borderline diabetic, now it's just the opposite. Would love to hear from any/all of you! Take care & have a fabulous day!!!!
Cathy, I take a liquid fish oil omega-3 supplement. Rescue 1250. 1-800-26-alive. Suggested 2-3 teaspoons a day. It goes into my oatmeal along with the ground flaxseed. Tastes just like buttter. NOT. It really has a slightly fishy taste. It is great for cholesterol which is good for the heart.
Also try Susan Maria's website for Bariatric vitamins and supplements.
www.Bariatriceating.com . Good resource for info andyou can also purchase vitamins and supplements from her. She has an online support group meeting on Thursday evenings for those of us that can't get to a local support group meeting.
Course as we loose weight our nutritional needs change and so does our taste. You might want to check with the nutritionist about the blood sugar issue. Doesn't hurt to keep following up on any new issues. After all we are the guinea pigs and the data is constantly changing. Hope this helps. Elissa

Cathy, regarding the low bs, watch your labs closely. I am thinking I am finding a connection between a couple of vitamin deficiencies (or changing numbers even if still within range) with my dropping blood sugars. I am currently 5 yrs post op, and started noticing problems about 2-2.5 yrs post op. There is tons of research on the net about low bs after wls and very little to tell us why it is happening and some of that is pretty frightening. I was thrilled to find that once I started to get my labs back in line, the benefit of a great improvement with my bs that seemed to go with it. This big problem might just be that simple! We can only hope. At any rate, don't dismiss it, be sure to run it by your doc/ surgeon. It is something that needs to be watched.
In addition to the labs, I have found I can not do any simple carbs at all without my bs dropping far too low. I stick with mostly protein and complex carbs. I keep peanut butter handy in the event that I do have an episode with my bs dropping. It helps me to get mine back up before I am in trouble. One last thing that might be helpful to you. Stay well hydrated. If I am even slightly dehydrated, my blood sugars can drop like a rocket. I am drinking water all the time.
About the fish oil. Elissa and Rob are absolutely right ... it is excellent supplement on so many levels. It did not mess with my blood sugar levels at all, and has done wonders for my skin, hair, cholesterol, etc. Since I was told after bypass, that I would not fully absorb oils/fats and might have dumping with them (I do) my personal choice was to use a product called Coromega 3 - it is an emulsified fish oil and I have not had any problems with it at all, in fact just the opposite. It is in a little package - looks and tastes like orange yogurt. No pill to swallow. You can pick it up at the Vitamin shoppe, a number of other places in person and online.
