Weekend roll call

Hi DE folks,

Well, I have been switching out my son's summer clothes for winter stuff this morning, doing laundry, folding, moving stuff around in the closets . . . and I've run out of steam LOL. Figured I'd drop in to see what you all are up to . . .

My daughter has totally outgrown last year's warm clothing so that means a trip to the outlets real soon. Sigh. I am really worried about her continuous weight gain -- ever since we moved up here to my mother's -- she's my mom's snacking partner and my mom sneaks food to her, I've asked her to stop but she thinks it is funny. My daughter is 8, weighed 90 pounds at the doctor yesterday morning. The doctor was thoroughly alarmed at the weight gain and mentioned that if she keeps this up, she is a prime candidate for developing type 2 diabetes. This doesn't seem to phase my mom, in fact, it is going to get us into a huge argument here any day now and then who knows where we'll wind up.

I have been trying to save up money for a place of our own but that's slow going, sigh. It just really ****** me off that my mom, who is morbidly obese, would wish that on her granddaughter.

I am still working towards my Halloween goal of getting into the 160's . . . I have stalled in the low 170's (have been hovering between 171-173 all week) but I'm sure this is because I've been snacking here and there this week instead of following my no-snacking rule. If I stay away from all evil carbs and stick to nothing but protein for the next few days, I *might* see 169 by the end of the month. Seems like just one carby-snack (I had a couple of muffins this week?) sets me back a couple of pounds, or stalls me. Also, last weekend, I went out to the bar with a couple of friends and knocked back a few beers -- ugh, never again, folks. I had a hangover to beat the band . . . plus consumed all those empty calories.

Well, I'd better get back to work before I get too comfortable sitting here, LOL. Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Hi BJ and the rest of DE

BJ I feel your pain with your mom.  My parents always followed their own set of rules when it came to my son.  I would say one thing and they would do the complete oppisite.  Use to make me so mad.  I also feel your pain with the changing around of clothes, I should be doing that now, but I keep making excuses on why I am not doing it.  Now that I am laid off there are no more excuses.

Today I went to my church for our fall festival, the rain held off and it was a great time.  Wish more people could have made it though.  We were raising money for a village in the Congo whose water well is not working and they have to walk for a day just to ge****er, very sad, makes me appreciate my nasty water here that smells like rotten eggs.

Tomorrow going to church and then who knows what.  Should be a nice day though.

Have a great rest of the weekend.

Deanna

Christ in you the hope of Glory!!!!

Hi BJ,
Ed and I were over in Lakeside yesterday touring the New Dimension Models, just to kill some empty weekend time.  Cat Country was there so we got points for going through each model.  We entered the drawings and I actually won a $25 gift card for Baywood-Signature's Restaurant.  I really wanted the 42" TV though.  Oh well, ya can't win them all.

I feel bad for you with this issue about your mom and daughter.  I know she's only 8 years old, but maybe a heart to heart talk with her might help.  Use yourself as an example of how dangerous it is to be obese, and that snacking is ok as long as she eats healthy stuff.  I thought it would be really hard for the rest of my family when I decided NOT to buy the bad stuff. I kept thinking, "I'm not the only person here and these kids still have to eat.  Why should they do without just because I have to?"  Well guess what?  They WILL eat what's here and if the junk food and poopy snacks aren't even in the house, they have no choice but to eat healthier.  Either that or go hungry.  I buy potato chips from time to time but they sit in the cupboard and get stale anymore.  My family has adjusted to the new choices and actually ask me to get some fresh fruit and veggies, granola bars, stuff like that.  Periodically, I have to clean out the fridge and cupboards and get rid of the junk food because it just sits there.  Even Alex, who would never put anything healthy in his mouth, is eating better.  I still struggle to get him to eat vegetables but hey, at least he doesn't eat the junk anymore.

You could also include your daughter in the meal planning, being certain to include items from all the food groups.  It will teach her how to make healthy choices and instill a lifetime of healthy eating habits,  Take walks with her.  Ride bikes together. More exercise for you both can only be a good thing. You will be spending quality time with her rather than her sitting around snacking with Gramma.

When my kids were little and before we moved to Delaware, my mother lived with me off and on for about 4 years.  I was a single Mom and she helped with the kids so I could stay at work.  I know how frustrating it can be when she goes against your wishes.  My mom always fixed healthy foods for my kids though, but she DID give them the occasional junky thingy.  She set aside time each day for the kids to turn off the TV and go outside and play. She'd sit on the deck with her Reader's Digest while they rammed around outside, or she'd take them to the pool and flop around in the water with them. As far as food went, healthy stuff was always put on their plate.  If they chose not to eat it, tough.  They weren't getting anything special.

Does your Mom buy the food for the family?  You can take control over what your children eat.  I would never condone having a fight with Mom about it, but if she insists on having all the junk food, tell her flat out...."don't give that crap to my kids.  I don't want them to go through what I have gone through being obese all of my life."  I did it but my Mom isn't a junk food junkie so it wasn't that hard.  I wish you well.

Bj, Wish we had the answers to this one. If you ever get it please pass on. Remember one thing . Obesity is an illness just like cancer or any other illness. Your Mom dosen't get it ! She is Obese and miserable. Misery likes company and in this case she is using your daughter. for her company. It is hard but you could argue with her until the cows come home and she still wouldn't get it. Children learn by what they see not what they hear so you can talk, talk and talk to your daughter she will not get it either. Show her good examples. Eat healthy yourself and exercise. Envite her to eat and exercise with you. It is a win/win for all. Did the Dr. talk to her ? They said for Alexus to grow into her weight. Right !!!!  I cook a healthy dinner every night . The kids Dad picks them up from the Boys and Girls Club and many nights brings them home with Mc Donalds. Now which do you think they will eat ? I do keep cooked chicken in the refrigarator for Alexus will eat chicken over anything. Check out Harris Teeter on Sundays. They have whole roasted chickens for $4.99 and every 4 hours mark them down to $2.99. If I am lucky to get there at the right time I buy extra and freeze them. Sometimes they have roasted turkey breast marked down too. If all else fails turn it over to God ! Start praying for your Mom and daughter. See you lighter. Joanne
