Ok ..I was really bad last night. I didnt eat a "real dinner"  Instead i was busy watching the phillies game while at work and  snacked .  My dinner consisted of chips and dip and crunch n munch toffey flavor.  I didn't eat  huge amounts but i did eat my share as much as possible.  The sad part was when i got hungry i went to sleep instead of eating, and i had eggfaces italian bean salad that i had made with me.  Ok so i guess i will get back onthe wagon today and try to eat better.

What is everyone else up to? Anyone else have a confession? I hope you all have great day  and enjoy the outdoors while we can.

Well, since you asked . . . ahem.

Last night, after an entire good week of eating well, I splurged on ice cream. I had promised my kids I would take them for one of those dollar-menu sundaes if they did their chores and homework without a huge production (we have been having real problems here with both of them questioning my authority and then my mother sabotaging me at every turn).

What's really sad is that, I not only ate one for myself (telling myself I deserved "just this one treat,") I also got up in the middle of the night and ate the one I had put in the freezer for my mother LOL.

It is almost like, if I don't have the crap in the house, I make sensible eating choices. But if I have stashed snacky-type stuff for the kids (my son with type-1 diabetes in particular needs a stock of individually-sized snacks to take to school, etc. that must contain 20-30 carbs), I wind up helping myself to them.

No willpower at all. And, no, the ice cream didn't make me sick either, I don't dump, unfortunately. Today is a new day -- I had a healthy breakfast of bacon and eggs. And later this afternoon I'm doing a week's worth of grocery shopping and NOT NOT NOT putting anything tempting into the cart.

Hope everyone has a good day!

Amy, You are not alone ! I do good for days but my weekness is chocolate. This week it has been resens ( chocolate over carmels). I have all the healthy stuff in the house but it is not the same. You have it hard with your partner's eating habits too. The hours you work don't help either. The biggest key is to eat our protein first. If we are full on protein we won't eat as much. It is all about choices. It is easier for some because they dump or can't  eat sugar. Unfornately some of us don't have that restriction to help us so it is on our heads instead of our stomach. Good luck getting back on track. Thanks for being truthful. I wish more were like you and BJ. Everyone needs to know the truth about surgery. It is not a cure all or easy fix. You have to work at it every day for the rest of your life. We have a tool and it is up to us to work it. That tool does get broken too and needs to be fixed. Talking from someone whoknows first hand. Sorry I will stop rambing ! Boy could I write a book ! How about you BJ ? The tell it all ! See you lighter. Joanne

Hi Amy,

Yeah, there must be something in the air...the ghosts & goblins are putting spells on us all....

I was tempted by those packages of little Twix bars on sale...the mini ones were 10 for $0.77 (Rite Aid sale last week). After looking at the nutrition info, I tried to make the best choice as far as sugars go.  That was mistake #1--allowing myself to look, and mistake #2--giving myself permission to buy. Then, mistake #3--I gobbled them down in in 2 days! I was so mad at myself!! Then I got a little afraid that I may have stretched my pouch or possibly caused other damage.  In my defense, though, it was pre-TOM. I can't believe I couldn't walk right on by them in the stores, like I have done since surgery.

That was my first real major cheat since surgery in April, so I shouldn't be TOO hard on myself, I suppose. I just won't do it again. I was surprised, though, that I never felt full or sick. I saw Dr. Peters at a support group mtg last week, and said it was because all the chocolate just melted into a syrup and slid right on through.

All that Halloween candy is just too tempting...I now know to stay away...especially after Halloween when it's all going to be 1/2 price!

Hope all is well otherwise...

Something about Halloween candy that just lures us in, I guess . . . When I had my rny surgery in June of 2004, I was as strict as one could be with every bite of food I put in my mouth for four months.

Then, Halloween rolled around and candy corn appeared in the house. Now, keep in mind I don't particularly even CARE for candy corn -- but it was out in a bowl and I found myself reaching for it almost unconsciously. And once I realized what I was doing, I was so upset, because we had been told by surgeons and other postops that the sugar would make us deathly ill.

Nope.

I sure do wish I'd never experimented with that damn Halloween candy. Because now I know I can eat *anything* and not get ill.

I do think I have found a tasty solution to my soda craving, however. I really really missed my Coca-Cola. But their new product "Coke Zero" tastes exactly like it (no carbs/calories, very low sodium). I hate Diet Coke's aftertaste -- but the Zero product has none. Wooo hoooo!!

Hi BJ,

It really is an issue of mind over matter, isn't it? I know, for me, usually if I take just one bite, I'm doomed! But, sometimes I do. I am getting much better at taking just a taste or small bite, though. That's risky behavior...as you found out with the candy corn. I understand how you feel...why did I take just that first little bite? Oh well...it's just another bridge we have to cross and a challenge to overcome...we'll all do better next time, right?

Regarding soda, I'm jealous of you...I was told over and over again (during pre-op classes, etc.)  NO SODA at all after surgery , and I was ***HUGE*** Diet Coke fan. The joke was a 32oz. cup of Diet Coke was a natural extension of my hand...I drank at least 2 32oz cups (from McD's, Wawa, etc.) a day.

I am pleased to say, that except for 2 tiny sips, I have not had any soda since early March. I am honestly glad to be off of that habit, but I really do miss it sometimes, especially after dinner. Once in a while, that "I want something cold and fizzy" craving comes back. Not too often, though. Now I tend to drink a lot of Powerade Zero and Crystal LIght, and some good 'ole water, too!

Good luck to you (and everyone else with this little dilemma) with staying away from the "poison" candy!

Enjoy your weekend!

Amy,
Don't beat yourself up.  We all fall off the wagon from time to time.  You went to sleep because of the carbs you consumed.  Carbs knock me out every time, and I am as bad as anyone else when it comes to giving into the temptation.  I know exactly what I am doing and why I am doing it, but thoughts do not ease the craving, action does.  Having something to replace the action of sneaking into that junk would help.  I'm not working right now so being home all day makes it hard.  I have actually taken a calculator and figured out how many M&M's I can eat without going over my sugar grams, and how many Hershey Kisses I can have.  That is just deplorable.  I am not a big ice cream fan but Schwan's has a great fat free/sugar free creme bar product that is really good, and satisfies that sweet craving.  They come in raspberry and orange.

My confession?  I sabotage my own efforts to eat healthy by making a really healthy, high protein 1/2 sandwich, and then turn around and put some stupid potato chips on it.  Is that ridiculous or what?  I love potato chips, I can't help it.  I used to put a big pile of them on my plate so at least putting just a few on my sammie is a -little- better than eating half the bag.
