Hi everyone.... It has really been a long time since I have posted.  I had gastric bypass surgery in 12/2004.   Well I am having some health issues and was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same.  I am unable to get my protein levels and iron levels up to normal.  I am eating about 100 grams of protein a day and taking 3 iron pills (close to 1000 mg ) a day.  Anyone have any suggestions on how to bring up my levels to normal.  I have tried supplements as well as food.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Rose have you been back to the Dr's?  There may be some blood tests they can do to determine the problem.  Iron levels dropping may be you need the iron infusions - the oral iron is not working because it could be malabsorbed from you new system.  As far as protein dropping what types of protein are you eating?  Are you keeping a diary of this info.  It would be good to give to the Dr's so that they can do a proper evaluation.  I wish you luck with your journey.  I have been ill but mine has been a low white count.  I had my surgery June 2004.  I wonder does all the problems from malabsorption occur around the 4 year mark?

Hi Debbie

My family doctor says that if my iron levels don't go up within the next 3 months, we are going to try again to get insurance approval for the iron shots.  For some reason, the insurance don't want to pay for the shots.

I didn't have any of these problems the first 3 years.  I don't understand why the sudden change in the 4th year.

First it was the cataract surgeries caused by the low protein levels (gastric bypass) and now this.

What are they doing for the low white count.  I will be praying for you.  ((HUGS))  Rose

I wonder what happens to us in the fourth year?  Its funny I have been seeing that year as being a sick year for people.

I can't believe the insurance doesn't want to pay for shots.  Do stay on top of that iron....call them yourself and found out what their rationale is so that you understand why.

My white count problem went on for years but then in my 4th year out I contracted shingles which made the problem worse. They are providing me with neutrophil injection when its needed.  I go to see hemotologist every 6 mos.  if that number gets below 3.5 then the injection is given.  I can't seem to get my counts above 4 these days.  I guess that explains all the colds I catch.  I really hate being like this these days.

I am still battling pains from the shingles episode.  I never really knew had bad you could hurt until I contracted this....Its not easy to be happy and positive when you feel it.  I understand it should be temporary but no one knows for sure when it will go away.  I have been toying with meds but most make me very dopey....I need to function for work.  Its been a journey I would never want to repeat.  I think now...was my quest to get healthy with this surgery a success or a failure?
