To tell or not to tell....

I am very interested in the Lap Band procedure. I just started the process of going through insurance and chosing a doctor. I feel that this is the best decision for me but I don't know that I want the world to know what I am doing. Certainly my husband and close family would know. Is it bad for me to keep this from co-workers and friends?? I know I would gain support but I also think there will be a lot of skeptics and I don't know that I am ready for the criticism. I may feel different about it after losing the weight but now I am not  comfortable with talking with everyone about this. I imagine people will ask me how the heck I am losing weight and responding with, "I am eating a lot less and excercising." That would be the truth but not the whole truth. Any thoughts on this?

I decided not to tell my co workers and most everyone. When asked how i was losing weight I said eating healthier which wasnt a lie. I have had lots of complications which required to be hospitalized and surgery. I still made up stories saying a gallbladder, appendix etc. Kind of run out of stories and as of last week they know and I am at the point this far in my journey that it doesnt matter what others think but then again I work with nurses and surgeons that DO NOT believe in Bariatric Surgery (only because the hospital OR where I work doesnt perform it there). I also did NOT want everyone to watch every bite I eat. After what I went thru it is about my health not what everyone thinks. Hope this helps..........

I didn't tell too many people about surgery.  I didn't want to be under a microscope.  People do that....but then again they started to think I had cancer.  Its a real no win situation.  Do what you feel comfortable doing.  Its your life and it does not matter what others think. Debbie

Abby, I think this is a personal choice !! I know many people who don't tell and many who tell the world. I personally am one who tells the world but you have to do what you feel is right for you personally.  I even know someone whos own father still does not know and she is about 4 years out.  Whatever decision you make just know you are not alone. Also I want you to know we do have a support group in Harrington if you are interested in attending a group near you. See you lighter. Joanne

Hello,

I'm still pre op but I told alot of people I was having it done...They were all really supportive except my brother who is just worried.... I basically just listened to him ramble then said I was still having it done and he hasn't really said anything else. I'm a tell all kinda gal.. I think it gets me in trouble sometimes lol... You need to do what your heart tells you... If your not ready for the criticism then maybe you shouldn't tell....Its whats healthy for you mind body and spirit!

Good luck

Marcie

Abby, Because of the time off work, most people knew I had surgery so I didn't really make it a secret, but most people didn't ask which kind of surgery.  As the weight started coming off & others began noticing, I also said the "healthier eating" line, which IS true.  Word trickled out to those who were interested.  I really didn't care one way or another since I do eat differently than I did and always will. In other words, as others have said, it's your business and your comfort level. Good luck! Love & peace, Fran

Sharon: How are you doing now? I just went back and read on your profile about how you had to have the band removed. You sure have had major problems with this!!!! I believe you were in the hospital when I had my surgery in December. At the time they had to repare your band for slipping. I'm sure you feel alot better now? At least I hope you are. I have a question for your? I saw on the web site how you have the hyper-link for how to create a weight loss chart on Ticker Factory. I clicked on it and was able to make a chart, but could not figure how to down load it to the web site and have it associated with my name. I would appreciate any help you can offer.                                                                                                                         Rosemary
