Hey everyone, Do any of you wear the medical alert bracelets or necklaces? I have had one since 1997 for my heart disease but since my surgery, I had to add "gastric bypass-no blind NG tube" to it. I went to a jeweler and ordered a new one. I am allergic to most metals against my skin....I can't wear earrings or necklaces unless they are 24K or sterling silver. So I ordered this thing made of sterling silver and it cost me $148. I told the guy at the store that if it gives me a rash, I would be bringing it back for a refund. He said "no biggie, we'll take care of it." I wore it for only 5 days and it gave me a rash; blisters, itching, swelling, the works. I took it back to the store and of course, the story was completely different. The guy said, "we can't take it back because it's engraved with your personal information and we'd never be able to resell it." I asked him why the manufacturer can't refund me, take the piece and melt it back down and reuse the metal. He couldn't give me a satisfactory answer. Now I am stuck with a 1" diameter medical alert pendant that I can't wear. It says: Heart: taking Plavix gastric bypass: no blind NG tube Those 2 things about me will never change. I will always take plavix because of the 5 stents in my heart, and the gastric bypass pouch is for life too. So guess what I did? I had the alert tattooed right to my chest! Right where the pendant would sit. Anyone out there need this pendant? It really is nice but I can't use it. I would take 1/2 of what I paid for it, and I'll throw in postage too. KathyG

I know I should get one...but I haven't used one of these since surgery. Bad girl I guess you can say. Its a shame you had to spend $$$ to find this out.....In the future perhaps you can ask to wear the pendant before engraving it to see if you have an reaction. The tattoo is a great idea....now tell me did it hurt? How big? Debbie

Kathy, I wear 2 id's. One is a 14k gold heart around my neck. The other is a bracelet from www.LaurensHope.com. It is stainless steel. I have numerous interchangeable bracelets that I can attach onto the plate which I had engraved with Gastric Bypass, No NG tube/No asprin/no sugar/no NSAIDS. I also had CHRIAS & their phone number put on it. I wouldn't go out without them on. I gave such a fuss at my recent surgery they allowed me to keep the necklace on. Taped it to my body. LOL. I agreed to remove the bracelet. NG tubes do go into the stomach and could puncture the new stomach. OUCH. I have an extra plate if you want to try it. All it says on it is "See wallet". You can see if you are allergic to it!!. Let me know. ((HUGS)) Elissa

I got a Medic Alert bracelet right after surgery but had trouble wearing it. So I attached it to my purse. I know that's not a perfect solution, but I'm never really out without my purse anyway. Just an idea for that necklace you can't wear... Fran
