Hope this article comes thru ok - it's on ghrelin & leptin re sleep... Taken from Good Morning America (ABC.com): April 25, 2006 -- It's conventional wisdom that if you want to shed some weight, you head to the gym and eat less. It turns out, however, that sleeping may be one of the best things people can do to get thin. "There's convincing evidence that a good night's sleep really can pay dividends in terms of weight control," said "Good Morning America" medical contributor Dr. David Katz. New studies show that sleeping fewer than eight hours a night boosts our levels of ghrelin, a hormone that makes us feel hungry, while suppressing another hormone, leptin, that makes us feel full. In fact, experts are starting to see a critical link. Americans are sleeping less than ever and are bigger than ever: 63 percent of American adults do not get eight hours of sleep a night, and 65 percent are overweight or obese. And, of course, sleeping enough helps on multiple levels. "You'll feel more energetic," Katz said. "You'll feel more like doing physical activity. You'll be more thoughtful about your food choice, but you will actually have influenced hormones that play a role in appetite."

I saw that on the evening news last night. Why have I not heard about these hormones before the meeting at PMRI a couple of weeks ago? It is seems they might be the buzz words of the month. It is interesting and I would love to learn more about it. Keep the info coming. Stay warm, Ellen

I swear Ellen, that's exactly what I was thinking.... These must be the new buzz words. When I researched WLS and had my surgery the "buzz" was all about 3 servings of milk will make you lose weight... I wonder if that would have worked pre-surgery.

Right after I had RNY I heard that you can lose weight while you sleep. I suggested to Dr. Peter's that I was going to go to bed and sleep until I reached my goal. Needless to say.... I got a lecture on excercise lol. It is fascinating to see, now that I am aware of Leptin just how often it comes up. Seems to play such a key role. And the research continues!! Thank you for sharing this Gigee

I know that sleeping alot doesn't help me. I used to sleep 10 plus hours a night and I was never thin or even close. Maybe they will come out with a test thingy like for diabetes so we can stick ourselves in the am to check it, and go back to bed if we need more. Okay, so does anyone know how to we get our leptin levels checked? Thanks for all the info. Keep it coming!!! ((HUGS)) E

LOL I guess that diet & exercise thing is the key ! I DO have to admit, it is easier to stick to the healthier routine when I am getting more sleep.
