I am home second day post op. I am still on clear liquids. I had some troubles with passing gas so I had some trouble the first day getting liquids in. I have had a full day of clear liquids and tolerated it well. All is well with the gas and feel much better now. When do I advance to full liquids? Should I try my protein shakes tomorrow with water or skim milk?

hi i was on clears for 4 days before i was to try any thing elce. but if you really want to try the protein with the water first. but your best bet is to do what your dr told you, you should have been told how many days for what. good luck. and gas x does wonders for gas the chewable kind lol. belinda

Amanda, When you were discharged from the hospital the nurse should of given you discharge instructions with the doctors orders and requirements. I was discharged from Christiana again (4th admission) in a year as a CHRIAS patient this past Wednesday and it does say for me that is full liquids for 4 weeks. DO NOT follow my instructions tho because I am not a normal Bariatric patient. Sounds weird but I have had complications, Sorry.

Amanda yes you should have received a discharge sheet with specific directions. I know I did when I left St. Francis a month ago. I was on full liquids for two days then moved to soft foods. You should find this sheet (you should have signed it) and see what it says. Good luck Michelle

Thanks for all the comments. For some reason everything I learned and had in writing in front of my face did not mean anything. I am just so scared of doing something wrong or not doing enough of something. This metallic taste in my mouth is horrible and can't wait for that to go away. I got my Urso Forte today fromt he Stanton pharmacy and with my insurance it was only $10. Without insurance it would have been $150. But back to the topic of my diet. I talked to Mary Ellen and I am just going to do what I can and get as much protein and fluids as I can. Today was much better. It is good to be able to talk to yall here online and get ideas and information. Thanks so much! Happy protein to all of you Amanda

Amanda, If it eases your mind I was at least two weeks and some days still I don't get in all the protein, although I'm striving to pick better choices. Now that I am putting everything in fitday I'm rocking through the protein everyday. It's a slow process and your pouch is sore and swollen from surgery, so give it time to heal and you'll be fine. Like MaryEllen said just get in what you can....don't push or prod it in, when youare done you are done for now. It will come and it gets easier. Michelle

Michelle, Thanks so much for the encouragement. I have another question maybe you or someone else can help me with. When I wake up from a nap or in the middle of the night and drink something it hurts. Is there some trick to temperature or timing that I am not aware of? Amanda

Amanda, I just sip, I've had where I take more than a sip and it hurts. Just take your time. I haven't had any problem with the temperature of liquids, of course my pooch early on loved a cup of hot decaf tea....so soothing when you are healing. Amanda, feel free to email me [email protected] or here if you have any other questions. We are all learning at this point right! Michelle

Amanda, early on (the first 6 weeks or so) if I didn't stick to my eating every 2-3 hour schedule I would have severe pain. I think it was because I let my mouch get too empty. I found that if I ate every 2-3 hours, even if it was just a bite or 2 or some yogurt I was fine. Remember, it will take 3 months or more before you're completely healed, so just little sips and try to eat with a baby spoon to keep your bites small.
