My gastric bypass surgery is scheduled very soon dec 20th to be exact and i have 14 lbs to lose or i can't get the surgery as i have the state medicaid. I stopped smoking and have been working hard although i keep going up and down a few lbs. Are there any suggestions out there as to what i can do, i have to actually lose this weight by dec 8th. i was thinking about slim fast but i don't know if i can do this before surgery. if there are any suggestions please write them here or email me if you have or have had the same kind of situation.

did i miss something? why do you have to loose weight? I do not remember anyone telling me to loose weight between now and surgery. I was told CLEARLY NOT to gain any weight. I keep the food diary and meet w the dietian. I understand your frustration about the weight loss. Congrats on stop smoking!!! C

well i have delaware physicians care which is one of the state medicaid and they require that u lose 2% of ur body weight from the time that u went for ur consultation until the time of ur preop appointment. i know it sucks if it was that damn easy i either wouldn't need this surgery or wouldn't need their help to get the damn surgery. i have rested my case all i can do is try my best to lose the weight whichever way i can, i was going to try slim fast or something like that and push my preop date closer to my surgery instead of having it in a week from now. i'm so very frustrated i have been doing all my appointments and the process and everything i've been doing this since june almost 6 six so now i'm getting a little discouraged. and it's hard to stay smoke free and all those other things but i hope to hear from u soon. thanx for the support.

Latrish: I am to have surgery on Dec. 5th. Dr. Irgau has me on a protein diet to srink my liver. He talked to me about this when I had my appointment in Aug. The reason for putting on the diet is that when I was diagnosed with the diebetes in 2000 I had an infection in my liver which made it enlarged. This protein diet consist of shakes, soup and a nutrition bar. You can only get this from Dr. Irgau's office and it is not cheap!!! I paid $99.00 for a weeks worth of this. I'm also home from work today because I have the "protein poops" (sorry)!!! But if you want to lose weight this stuff will do it. They told me that in a week you can lose between 10 to 14llbs. It is called Optifast and it is different from the protein shakes that you will be doing after surgery. I hope this helps you and Good luck!!! Rosemary

Have you tried to keep your protein levels on the high side? Cream of Wheat made with skim milk 8oz. (it will be loose) and a scoop of protein powder is a high level of protein that has always and still does fill me. Soups with added cheese, hot chocolate made with skim milk and protein powder is also a good source. Why not try walking as a added bonus. It will burn calories and get you on the track to a healthy lifestyle. Just taking a few more steps each day is and has been a goal for me. FYI. This time last year I could hardly walk around the house literally and on Thanksgiving Day I ''Ran'' a 5K race/walk in Wilmington. I hope this helps you on your journey.............
