Although I am pre-op, I understand that swallowing pills post op will be a situation. I am currently taking Effexor xr 150 capsules. Before I ask the doc to switch my med, does anyone take Effexor xr 150 capsules or alike with suggestions on taking a capsule post-op? Thanks

Cecilia, Post op you will need to have your pills crushed. You can buy a pill crusher at the dollar store or Happy Harrys, or you can find out if they offer your meds in liquid form. Hope that answers your questions Michelle

I would ask the doctor about the effexor xr, I was told I was not allowed to take it because of the extended release and something with the stomach. So just double check to be on the safe side. Christie

I was on Effexor XR 150mg capsules pre-op. After surgery, You will need to open the capsule and sprinkle it on some applesauce or yogurt. DO NOT MIX it in, or allow the little beads of medication to get crushed. These are extended(slow) release capsules and if the beads are broken, you will get all of the medication too fast. Just sprinkle on top of a spoonful of soft food and swallow as is. Chase with a swish of something sweet tasting, like Crystal Light. Just don't chew or break those beads. Believe me, you don't want the full effect of a slow release medication all at once. The capsule dissolves pretty easily so you could also drop it into a beverage to soften it some, then scoop it out with a spoon and swallow it. I chose that method and then after a couple of weeks I was able to swallow the capsule. I am off the Effexor now though. Good Luck!
