Home from surgery. Have some questions
Hi all,
Got home yesterday from St. Francis. I think all is okay. Just tired alot and little bit of pain from the drain.
I was told to stay on liquids until tomorrow and then go to pureeed foods. Are you suppose to constantly keep sipping on liquids. They told me to nurse and ounce of liquid an hour but I can do more. Is this normal? Also, can you pretty much start eating regular food just puree it good 1-2 TBS at a time? I know you cant have the sugar and fried foods but I bought refried beans, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes and my protein.
I know I am not getting enough liquid in but dont know how your suppose to get 64 ozs. in in one day.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Sharon
You will get it all in, but probably not the first few days. Relax, sip, and relax. Yes, you purchased correctly. Puree what is appealing, thin it out a bit, and keep up your fluids. Very soon you will be able to drink more. Don't forget the first month or two you are in the healing cycle.
Good luck in your journey,
Carol
Sharon,
I found the first month very difficult and confusing. Was I eating enough? What about protein? Then there were lioquids? What to do?What to do? Well I wuit worrying. I rested. I drank what I could. I ate what I could and the rest be damned.
with that said, I discovered sugar free popcicles! You get liquid 1oz per pop and they tast great to boot!!!I like th tropical flavors the best. These things saved me that first month and even today I snack on a lot of them everyday! I do not know if this is medically sound but I did not get in trouble from Dr. Wynn.
Best of luck!!!

Hi again.
Thanks for the posts. Is this normal. This morning I made a protein shake about 12 oz. with banana/strawberries unflavored unjury and splenda and ice. Didnt taste to hot but drank it anyway. Am I drinking to fast or too much if I finished about 8 oz. in 15 minutes. It didnt hurt and was wondering if it was going on through or staying in my pouch. If I am stretching it or what. I tried 1 oz. of beans today and had no problems. I took a long time to eat it. Are we suppose to be sticking to just an 1-2 oz. at a time even if we feel we can eat more. Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.
Sharon
Sharon,
Fluids will go through quick so doing 8 oz in 15 minutes is not bad. Now beans are more solid and will take you longer to digest. That is why many people prefer to eat protein rather than drink it....it stays with you longer and keeps you with a full feeling. Don't worry about stretching it....early out its hard to get the full feeling because the stomach nerve endings are still healing. That is why they tell us to only eat so much per meal. Once the stomach has had its healing time you will definitely know that full feeling.

Hi Debbie,
Thanks for getting back with me. I have been so worried about everything. From St. Francis they gave me the pureed foods list ...of things you can have but they are all different amounts you can have and its not clear if you can have anything else on the pureed part but do you stay at 1-2 oz. anyway because you dont get that full feeling. Thats what I am worried about. I ate some crab bisque today about a cup. Very thinned out and I stopped even though I felt I could have ate more and tonite I had a little mashed potatoes about 2 oz. and felt like they got stuck. I may have ate them to fast.
I guess my big question is do you just have the 1-2 oz. even though right now you dont feel full.
I have to wait till the 15th to see the doctor.
Thanks for helping.
Sharon
Answer to the big question is YES! Don't do more right now. Once the stomach nerve endings have healed in a few weeks you will feel full. By doing too much this early out you run the gamble of stretching stoma or stomach pouch. The heavier the food the less you will need to eat of it. So don't be alarm if you can only get 1 oz of chicken in vs 2 oz applesauce its the density!

Hi Sharon...Dr. Peters did my surgery on 8/24 and I too tried the Unjury unflavored. I did not like it at all! Instead, I bought Jim's Permalean (sold in the CHRIAS store) Vanilla and I mix it with a little over 4 oz. skim milk, 2 inches of frozen banana, 3 ice cubes and a 1 teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa powder (get the expensive kind...I paid about $9 for a canister at Genaurdi's). I then pulse blend it until the banana and ice are crushed. It's so YUMMY! Good Luck!
