Hi Paula - Sorry to hear that you have to endure pain and have to figure out how to get your body to absorb properly -but I'm thrilled to hear what a great attitude you have about the situation!

This board has changed a lot and is very inactive - but I still check in.
Warm Regards - Tammy -

I had GBS in 2003. For the first 2 years I was always freezing. I don't know what causes it, but I know it does pass. My mother and sister have also had the surgery and they agree, It does pass.

H All,

Wow, I don't recognize many people here. This forum has taken a change!

I had my surgery in Sept '05 by Dr Aranow. It went well and my weight loss was good.

The only problem that I now have is absorbing calcium into my system with my supplements. Also the same with Vit D. So, my PTH (parathyroid, a set of 4 rice sized glands in back of the reg thyroid that regulates the absorption of calcium) is hyper (high). If it continues to stay high, my body will begin to leech the calcium out of my bones, making them brittle and more prone to break as I age. (not good)

I saw a nic endocrinologist in Avon last week and he did a lot ofml blood work and a 24 hr urine collection in a jug to test how much calcium I'm spewing out instead of keeping it.

Aside from the RNY, I have a rapid evacuating colon and cannot break down many of my supplements if they are big and coated. They come right out whole. Also not good. So, I may have to take a pill that will help my intestines better absorb the calcium.

They're not sure, but I have chronic pain and it may be the deficiencies of the vit d and calcium. My low low low back the sacrum area is in constant pain and I'm in bed a lot. Also not something I wished for. I have two kids 12 & 10 and they are busy! I'm driving all around! I do what I can around the house and do it on my hands and knees if I have to. But I leave it and enjoy my kids instead.

Another reason to make sure your blood tests are all good!

My weight loss stopped long ago and last year my thyroid decided to burn out on me, so, it's tough to lose. I gained back (it's expected) some weight. 30lbs. But I don't fret over it. I lost so much and have gotten so much healthier and I'm alive!

I have one thing to say TAKE YOUR VITAMINS. And have your bloodwork done every year. I've kept up with all of m testing and we've been watching this problem for sometIme. It's SO important to do so to ensure good health when you age.

I hope everyone is and stays well. Have a wonderful spring!

I had Dr Aranow do my surgery. Like Kathy, I didn't know that Dr Joe Robles had moved to Middletown for his surgeries. He was operating out of Bristol Hospital the last I knew.

From the reviews that I've read, he's young like Dr A and has a really great laid make bed side manor, but is also tough like Dr A and wants you to do everything pre and post op to make your surgery a success.

I'd have to say consult with both surgeons and chose who you feel most suits your needs and comfort levels.

Good luck!
