I spent months researching and trying to make a decision also. I chose to have the vertical sleeve gastrectomy because of the potential negative things that can happen with both the band and the bypass. Please do as much research as possible-and when you decide, stick with your decision. I had my surgery on 6/1 at St. Francis in Hartford. I have lost 42 lbs in this process, 24 lbs since the surgery. Good luck to you.

Hi-
I am a patient also with Dr. R and chose him after researching for a long time. I had my surgery on June 1, actually had the vertical sleeve gastrectomy. I really had to stress that this was the surgery for me, as he wants his patients to have the best/fastest results, which he feels is the bypass. I had many reasons for choosing the sleeve, and so far am very happy with the results. I have lost 42 lbs during this process. He is very thorough, and actually because of his testing, found out that I had a hiatial hernia. He corrected this during my surgery-like a 2 for 1 deal. He is not all warm and fuzzy, but I feel he is a very good surgeon and generally cares for his patients and wants the best for him.  Good luck to you! Laurie

Topic: RE: Gas (Flatulance) & C-Dif Bacteria
Globirdie,
I would offer too that if you are two to three weeks out of surgery and you start to feel like an alien is eating it's way out of your stomach with extreme diarrhea, get yourself to an ER.
The antibiotics I took for a lymphandectomy killed all the good bacteria that keeps the bad bacteria in check.  My entire intestines and colon were infected and I spent five days in the hospital with C-Diff.
Also, the prescription they give to cure the C-Diff is also the drug they give to alcoholics to stop them from drinking.  Consume any alcohol while on this drug and you will be vomiting.  (My nurses didn't realize this and soaked my thermometer in alcohol.  Thankfully that isn't how temps are done anymore.)
Thanks for the timely advice Globirdie.
Best wishes for health and happiness.
Bev

Topic: Gas (Flatulance) & C-Dif Bacteria
I know that everyone who has had gastric bypass at some time has unexpected or unwanted gas at the most inopportune time with a bout of diarrhea mixed in.  .   It is usually related to over eating or sugar.   I get it

But in my case I had more then the usual amount and with  it occuring after ever meal no matter how small or what it was.   It was quite embarrassing not to mention the foamy diarrhea that accompanied it sometimes.

It got so bad over the last few weeks I took a trip to the emergency room and had a urine and stool sample.    Guess what I was diagnosed with a urinary infection and a C-Diff bacteria infection in my intestines.    I apparently have had this since my surgery and was caused by excess amount of antibiotics  I had to take for gangrene about 5 years ago.    The antibiotics created an imbalance in the intestines and laid dormant until I had the surgery and the changes in the absorption of fats and sugars only aspirates the symptoms.

I am happy to report I am doing better it is not perfect but at least I am having normal reactions instead of over the top gas and diarrhea.

my suggestion is that if anyone is having that kind of distress i suggest you contact your doctor and request a stool sample and see what is going on.    It is normal for a few bouts of gas periodically but not every meal or every day.

Have you looked into the gastric sleeve that doesn't cause malabsorption.  That is what I am going with at Lenox Hill Hospital.  Good luck.

There are no vetted DS doctors in CT.  You will probably have to travel.  If you are revising from the band (as I am) there are some in NYC.
Dr. Roslin and Dr. Pomp come to mind, but you should go to dsfacts.com and review the list.
