Topic: RE: Band over bypass

Don't do the band. Many reputable and experienced US Drs. don't even perform this procedure anymore. It's been eliminated in Europe and many US practices spend more time removing them, then performing them.

K-

I'm very late on this, and you may now never see it... But Id like to give you some advice, if I may.

  1. It's NOT abnormal to be up 20 lbs from your lowest 5 years after surgery.  You have nothing to feel embarrassed or ashamed about.
  2. It IS normal to be afraid that you're headed right back where you started.

You should definitely seek out the services of your surgeon's affiliated support group.  They are free.  And VERY VERY helpful.

You should call your surgeon and speak with his office.  Let them know you're not feeling well, gaining weight and that you've lost your insurance.  Let them look into it and see if there is something they can do for you.  I'm 1000% sure my surgeon would NEVER turn me away if I called and was in your position.  We would absolutely work something out- even if it was a payment plan.

Lastly- my advice, being 10 years out is simple:  GET BACK TO BASICS.  You need to put yourself in a position of priority in your life.  Your needs and your health must be at (or very near) the top of your list.  Look back at your basic maintenance diet and start simplifying your eating. If you don't have access to those resources any more for some reason- think about this balance in your eating:  Protein first, then vegetables then carbs, if there' any room left over (and if there's room you're probably not eating enough protein and veggies!).  Atkins stage one or induction (but keeping an eye on calorie intake in addition) is usually a very nice simple way to pair down your eating to a small list of 'acceptable' foods and still gain a feeling a satiety.

Finally, Exercise every day- ANY exercise - just get moving.

Best,

Lisa C

You are not alone, there are many people here including myself who are in the same boat. Lots of great advice on this thread. Don't beat yourself up of be ashamed or embarrassed. Those emotions are a waste of energy. You have so much to look forward to by getting back on track.

Best wishes,

K

Congrats to you ... I am 8 1/2 years out and have gained back 40 pounds from my lowest weight ... which was still 20 pounds from my goal. I still feel great, though. I am still 100 pounds less than my original weight. I may weigh between 195 and 199, but as long as I stay under 100, I am happy. Compared to where I started, I am able to do so much more with my life. I was almost 41 when I had the surgery done by Dr. Aranow. I am now 49, 1st time married (5 years), and feeling physically so much younger. Life isn't perfect since the surgery (I am drinking a bit too much and I still have arthritis), but compared to life before, I am a changed person. The biggest difference the surgery gave me was the confidence to get rid of the parasitic people in my life. I now choose to be the me I always knew I could be and surround myself with people that support me and my choices rather than those who played on my insecurities. Be happy with the changes... life is never perfect ... but compared to the alternative ... it is a dream.

Don't let anyone including a doctor judge you!  Go see Dr. Duffy; I'm sure he'll help you.  My friend did not have success with the surgery Valin performed either and couldn't eat anything healthy w/out getting sick :(

You will be successful once Dr. Duffy does the revision; she has been very successful and she's an older lady (72 yrs old).  Dr. Duffy said normally he doesn't operate on folks in that age group, but he really wanted to help her.  She also had a huge hernia that he repaired (abdominal).

Again, I wish you the best and always feel welcome to vent!  None of us should judge anyone, as we were all in the same boat at one point or another; or we wouldn't be on this site!
