Topic: RE: Seven Year Re-Birthday
Congratulations on such a wonderufl anniversary
I too thank god for each and every day and for going to Dr A for my surgery.
I've gained 26 pounds from my lowest over the past almost 6 years and I can not complain.
I had some big issues with low blood sugar but that was not due to the surgery. i'd had it before surgery. what cuased it was me stressing over the minor 23 pound gain and still seeing me as 300 pounds. i abused laxatives over a month daily and it set my whole system crazy. luckily i stopped and got myself to Dr A. I didnt feel i got the support I need there and continued on to a naturalist ND who has gottne me together with an endocrologist. along the way we've also found a thyroid issue.
Now over a year later I'm feeling great.
AND now that diet has the control on the LBS the meds for the thyroid have that working correclty and I'm starting to lose at a normal rate!!! So over the past 3 weeks I've ddropped 3 pounds.
I've always gone to the gym but now the old metobolish is doing what its suppose to.
Our bodies are a wonderful thing!
Good Luck god bless heres to another 7 wonderful years.

I know Becky - I was just thinking about how is this man going to keep up this level of attention and still keep growing and growing his practice?
Having had lapband surgery with Dr. Barba and then this revision to bypass with Dr. R - WOW what an AMAZING difference!!

I have Aetna and I know that I had to be in the program for 6 months. That was from the time Dr. A said he would take me as a patient.

He is married with kids...
The best thing is that his attention does not stop. I am 20 months out and he still pays just as much attention as he did early on.

Hey you all in the know, I am amazed at the attention Dr. R gives to each patient (especially right after surgery). How does he do it?
Does he have a life outside of the hospital? Does he have a very understanding wife that doesn't care that he is always working?
I'm just curious as I have never met anyone so dedicated to their profession.
Thanks for any info...I'd feel really silly asking him if he is married at my next appointment :)

Hi Paula - We are told to wait an hour after eating (Barba had the same rule) and actually after reading an article I am totally in synch with the hour rule - what the article said was that if you drink too soon after having dense food in the pouch over time you can stretch the "finger" size outlet to be the same size as the pouch and essentially will end up having like a 20 foot tube to fill before you feel full - also they say that the longer food is left in the pouch the better opportunity for absorption your body has - sooo after reading that it scared the sh&t out of me and I am paying attention to that rule! I haven't tried smar****er but I am LOVING the Special K protein water packets - it adds 5 grams of protein to water - I got the ice tea flavor and it is really good....Dr. R requires Zinc as one of the after surgery supplements so I take it - it says it helps boost immunities so it seems like a good idea to take it. I am exercising but not as much as I should be - I go on the recumbent bike several times a week - it is not as aggressive as the doctor would like - but I'll get there - I know it is sooooo key to getting the weight off and most importantly long term maintenance - my friend who has been so very successful with her WLS told me - don't even bother with the surgery is you aren't going to exercise and I totally believe her! Thank you so much for the encouragement and advice!
How are you doing?

Most insurance companies instituted a "mandatory 6 mos dietary supervison" in the year 2006-07. I had my RNY in 05 and didn't have to do it. It's just something they wanted to do to make sure that all the patients were truly ready and sure that they wanted this life changing surgery.
Six months may seem like a long time for you right now, but, in the long run, you will be able to get on the weight loss program ordered by your surgeon, it will get your liver in the proper health for surgery, it will also get your lungs and body ready for a big general surgery needing anesthesia, etc. It's not something to take lightly. You'll also be able to read about and attend lots of support groups so that you can have a lot of insight into what you will be dealing with after surgery.
I wish you luck, but don't fret so much on the 6 mos stuff. Have you checked with your ins co? Some may not require th 6 mos. It depends.

Oh, Tammy, I'm SO happy that the rough recovery is over and the results are kicking in. Did the doc tell you that you had to wait an hour to drink between eating? We were always told 15-20 min then we could drink something.
Have you tried the Smar****er? It's full of electrolytes and will give you a boost, also.
How come you have to take zinc lozenges?
The weight loss is great! Are you exercising at all?
Do you like shrimp? I would puree ****tail shrimp and add ****tail sauce and have a pseudo shrimp ****tail (or do it with mayo for shrimp salad) and it was a staple for me for a long time.
Your protein intake is AWESOME...at this point in time, this is what you should be focusing on most. The supplements will fit in with time...Make sure you're getting in enough water
Congrats!

Congratulations! Sounds like things are going very well and you are making good progress. Isn't it great that such a small amount of food can be statisfying?
Keep up the good work.
All my best

Congratulations Tammy
Keep up the good work. I switched from the zinc lozengers to just a zinc pill. Small Flat and goes down easy. You may want to switch.
