I have been on the fence for quite some time about getting RNY surgery and I am SO VERY CLOSE to doing it! My biggest question is this: Will my insurance cover it and what do I have to do. Currently I have CBA Blue which is a subsidary of Blue Cross Blue Shield. I also have Husky A (medicaid)as my secondary. I have a relative idea of what I probably have do since my mom had the RNY in May of 2005. I am not sure of my exact weight, last time I was weighed I was about 360lbs. I am 5'11 so I know my BMI falls into the category of being "suitable" for it. I am also diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. I am borderline hypertention and I am not sure about sleep apnea.
Yes, I know. I should just call them but it's 12:30 in the morningI'm just antsy!!!
Another question, I am in Naugatuck(next to Waterbury). My mom went thru Dr. Elmer Valin at St. Raphael' Hospital. I went with her a few times to see what she was doing and just being supportive for her.I have looked over his WHOLE website and I am pretty impressed. I looked at a few other surgeons but no one in particular stuck out. Does anyone have any suggestions for a surgeon? I understand that most insurance companies like people to go thru a "center of excellence"
So I might not get a response since it's July LOL but how did it go? Were you approved? If so, what kind of loophole did you have to go thru in order to get surgery? I have Husky A also and I am THIIIIIIS close to calling for an appt. with a surgeon!!!
That's what i ended up doing. Took out a loan for 15k, and had the surgery in NC with Dr. heider. That amount covered everything including my flight and hotel.
I'm from southern western mass and m insurance also doesn't cover the procedure. I wil be flying out of Bradley to Detroit for my surgery in two weeks. I did get a personal loan to cover the costs.
You pretty much cant do the first six months wrong but it is important for us to follow medical advice eat right and exercise. After about a year you want to be set in your new way of life which means following the rules. Its important since many of us try to go back to old habits. I promise you that if you continue to learn to use your tool you will be in control of your weight.

Hi Robyn,
Congratulations to you on your WL! That is awesome!!! This July I will celebrate 9 yrs out of surgery and am at my lowest weight (-100lbs). I have from time to time, gained +/- 10 lbs and managed to get it off, with a lot of hard work. Some advice for you is not to take back carbs or sugar...they are our enemy! Stay focused on protein and veggies and fruit. I didn't get sick for a long time because I was careful and a good rule follower, but it did happen, and was not pretty
I have had problems with hair loss and am again experiencing it. I'm working with my doctor to see if it is diet related. That's the only problem I really have had. I am totally off of all of my bp meds and my arthritis meds as well :).
I am from the New Haven area and had my surgery at Yale with Dr. Bell. He just left Yale, and all of his patients are sad, because he was an awesome support to all of us!
I wish you the very best, and feel free at any time to reach out.
Best to you.

Hi There,
Yes, the 13th will be one month and I'm down 25lbs. It's nothing I expected. I haven't gotten sick once and am not sure I'm doing things right...LOL I think I hear all of the horror stories and I'm expecting those all to happen to me. Nothing yet and for that I'm ecstatic.
Where are you from? Have you gained any of your weight back?
Thanks for reaching out....
Robyn
