Egg drop soup is one of the first foods that I enjoyed after surgery! It is easy to eat and yummy in general. It was on my list of approved foods by my surgeon at the time but I have heard that since last year it has been decided that it isn't actually a good source of protein. Maybe you should ask your Nut. what Dr. A's practice suggests.

Hey Patty, I had surgery on Monday and had egg drop soup for lunch today. It was on my ok list so I decided to give it a try. It felt pretty good to "chew" something again. It went down easy and caused no problems for me. {{{{HUGS}}}} Sandy

Egg Drop soup is Good Stuff! I lived off it the first 2 weeks after surgery. Still get it for a change of pace even after a year out! Good luck! Julio

RNY on 12/27/04 with
Hi, Patty! This is a perfect example of how different practices have different advice for their patients. All 3 people *****sponded to your post ahead of me had their RNY's done by a surgeon at the Hospital of St. Raphael and all enjoyed egg drop soup as part of the liquid stage of their diet. Dr. A. did my RNY, and there was no mention of egg drop soup in the list of foods that I was allowed to have. However, I remembered buying egg drop soup for my then-husband after his RNY at HSR, so I asked Dr. A.'s dietician about it and was told NOT to have it. You should have been given a list of acceptable foods for each stage of your diet by Dr. A.'s dietician. While you certainly are welcome to call her and ask about foods that aren't specifically listed or could e-mail anyone here who was banded by Dr. A. or could call any of the bandsters on the "green" list (available at Middlesex support group meetigs) of Dr. A.'s patients who are willing to be contacted, when in doubt, the safest, most conservative route is to not eat or drink anything unless it's on Dr. A.'s list. While writing this, I tried calling a couple of my friends who were banded by Dr. A. I just hung up from talking to one of them (Marcia K., who posts here from time to time) and she said that you are absolutely NOT to have egg drop soup at your stage. You can have the broth, but not the egg, so why bother. Just have broth. You should be having protein shakes and low- or non-fat sugar-free liquids, like Crystal Ligh****er, clear broth, etc. You can add some unflavored protein powder (like Beneprotein or Any Whey) to the liquids to give them some protein. You can also have SF jello, popsicles and fudgecicles (all of which are considered liquids). Low- or non-fat SF yogurt, as long as it has no pieces of anything in it, is OK, too, so flavors such as vanilla or lemon, that are completely smooth, are fine. You can also take plain yogurt and flavor it with Splenda and cinnamon or a little Crystal Light powder or a little SF gelatin powder to give a different flavor. Hope this helps, Debby

Lap Band on 03/29/06 with
Welcome Patty! I'm also a patient of Dr. A and had my lapband surgery on March 29th. How are you feeling?? How was your hospital stay? Hope all is well! As far as egg drop soup is concerned...if it doesn't appear on the Stage 3 diet we were given from Dr. A's office and again in the hospital, we can't have it. I had my two week check-up this past Wednesday with Dr. A and asked him if I could have oatmeal or mashed potatoes and he said absolutely NOT. Just stick with those items listed on the Stage 3 diet..If you notice, sugar free pudding is also on there. I add a scoop of ANY WHEY protein to my sugar free pudding and it tastes pretty good. Plus, I get 20 grams of protein out of it too! As bandsters we have to stay on the Stage 3 diet for 4 weeks...and Dr. A is not one to deviate from the diet stages. Our bands need time to heal properly so that they will be in great working order once the swelling goes down! Continued success to you and would love to see you at the Middlesex support group meetings. Always nice to have more bandsters there!! If you have any questions, I'm just an email away! Enjoy the holiday weekend. Warm regards, Angie
