Hi Kim...
I watched the 750 lb man, and the half-ton man last night. Both were rather interesting. The only thing that I didn't like was that both men said that there weight were a direct result of genetics... and ONLY genetics. Which, I have a problem when people say that.
I have what I beleive to be the "fat gene" too. But... I reached a point where I realized that BECAUSE of said gene, I needed to alter my lifestyle.. for GOOD. Lets face it, those of us with the gene can't sit in front of the TV and eat a big bag of doritos and NOT have it go directly to our butts. Hello!
Because our bodies don't process food the same way "normal" folks' do... we need to make sure we are smart about what we put into our bodies... knowing full well that if we put bad things into our sytem, our bodies wont like it -- and will do bad things to US!
Sooo... I'm a strong beleiver that obesity is a combination of things. Genetics, environment/learned habits, and choices. It's not ONLY genetics, or ONLY bad habits... but a special little mixture of the three. Which in some people, can be deadly.
It all comes down to self control. We lose weight by gaining self-control. Recognizing that our bodies can't handle things the same way "normal bodied" people can. We don't change our genetics, but we learn how to control it.
It just made me very sad to see the 750lb man lying in the hospital bed with wrappers of sun chips and twinkies all around him saying "It's not a matter of eating right, it's a matter of genetics..." I just wanted to reach into the TV and SHAKE him!! Tell him to wake up and LOOK around him...
At least the half ton man had enough sense to realize that he needed to change his lifestyle... and he did it, and is now half the man he used to be. The 750lb man though, refused to accept the fact that HE needed to change his ways of life... and sadly, he ended up dead.
On another note... there was an interesting show on Discovery Health last night at 10:00pm. It was called "Plastic Surgery: Before and After". This one was the story of 4 sisters who underwent WLS together... and then began the journey through plastics together. It was interesting and informative on both WLS and the Plastic Surgery that is needed in alot of cases following WLS. And the Bariatric Surgeon on the show actuallly was a WLS patient himself, which I thought was really great.
Anyways, that's my two cents...

CJ-
I agree with you completely. It is horrible to be born with "fat genes"; I was weeping through the whole two programs. I could relate to their anger. I understood that they were tired of being blamed for "doing that to themselves," but giving in to anger only makes things worse.
I felt bad for them and terrified for me. The good news is that my reaction was to throw out all the junk food left from my birthday party this weekend, then take my dog for a nice long walk.
It's going to be a good year!

Hey Arline..
I had a birthday party this weekend too!! Actually, it was more like alllll week long b-day party. On Friday I turned 30 years old... and my friends and family were partying with me all week long! It was crazy... and I behaved for the MOST part... I only ate the toppings off the pizzas, etc etc.
Well, good for you for throwing out that crap food... and best of luck!
