Low Blood Sugar

Ok, so I have finally started testing my blood sugar after months of being told to do so by my OH friends. But now my questions is how low is too low? I've looked through the literature that comes with the glucometer and I have looked online and they all either say how much is too high (which isn't my problem at all) or they say to ask your doctor what your range should be. I know that someone will say call a doctor to this question but my current healthcare situation isn't the best and I don't feel like getting my usual runaround that I usually get. Anyone who knows my situation know that whenever I have a health issue, it is pulling teeth between my doctors to get a solid answer, so I am trying to avoid that. Since I have been testing it has been between 72 and 92, before and after meals, never any higher, never any lower. I don't know whether this is good or not. I need to know what number is "OMG, call the ambulance" or otherwise there isn't much point in my testing. lol Thanks guys!

Those numbers are generally good if my old diabetic memory serves me well. 72 is starting to get on the lower side. I would call your PCP and ask him/her what they think as all Drs have their own opinion. I'm surprised they didn't tell you when they told you to get the meter. I just found a link that says anything under 70. Here it is: http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/hypoglycemia/#nodiabetes BTW, when your boyfriend said that some of the people Friday looked like they hadn't had surgery. I think you are going to be able to add yourself to that group as well very soon. You look fantastic. Maggie

Thanks for the link! Lots of helpful info! I spoke to a nurse here at work today as well. (I work at a school where we teach CNA's and LPN's.) She agreed with the info on the website and said that I should let my doctor know if it drops below 70. Thanks alot for the quick reply, good luck with your trip and thanks for the compliment. I am having a "fat day" so reading your compliment really cheered me up.

Hi, Christine! The numbers that I've found are: - 90-130, before meals - less than 180, 2 hours after meals If you're testing at the 70-90 level AFTER meals, you're doing exceptionally well. Maybe TOO well? Bette tested at 92 after coffee, but before breakfast, this morning

Thanks for replying. My problem is low blood sugar, I seem to be a bit hypoglecimic. I just had my mandatory mid morning snack and after a half an hour I am at 82. The highest I have ever been is 92 and frankly I am feeling a little blah this morning. Lets hope for the best!

72 shouldn't be low enough to casue a problem- if it is 72 and you are having one of your "spells" have a few crackers and a tablespoon of peanut butter or a piece of cheese. If you feel okay at 72 then great. While the guidelines say 70-100 is good- it can be rather individual where the line for hypoglycemia is. I have some patients who are upright and talking with a blood sugar in the 40's and have some who get loopy if it drops below 120. SO I guess the answer is- once you know where it is when you feel good- the next time you have a "spell" take it and see if the number is lower than the average.

Thanks for your reply. Yesterday I was feeling very "off" at 72 but after eating lunch I felt much better and tested at 101, the highest ever. Felt good all last night and this morning tested at 90 at 7:30 after breakfast. I felt so good, in fact, that I decided to skip my mid morning snack (figuring "why eat if I am not hungry?") and of cource got sick at about 10:30. I ate some cottage cheese and immediately tested, it was 89. It had been 90 when I felt great and 89 immediately after an "attack"? What can I make of that? Does this mean that it isn't my blood sugar after all? I'm sorry if I am being dense or something, I just don't get how this all works.
