Hi everyone, I don't know if many of you know, but I am a full time mom, college student and I work full time. I am looking at my calendar and see that finals will be here before I know it. Pre-op I used to depend on coffee to get me through. Is coffee, and I don't mean decaff, a total no no, or can we have it with in reason? Hugs, Chrissy

I don't know the official answer but I have always heard that coffee is dehydrating and that is why we are told not to drink it or anything else with caffine.

I have one cup a day - my pouch tells me not to drink much more. I am more of a tea drinker now (you can find tea with caffeine). But I wouldn't go nuts with it - the caffeine does dehydrate you and that's not good. I think the rule is for every one cup of caffeine you drink, drink 2 cups of water, or something like that. I'm a Starbucks ***** I swear......I get one a day. I get it nonfat...... Love, Tammy

Thanks ladies. I will not be able to make it through finals with out java! I will try one 8 oz cup and see if that does the trick. I will also follow it with lots of H2O. Tammy, I am also a Starbucks ***** but have been drinking the decaff because I just love their Java. Thanks again! Hugs, Chrissy

somebody also said something about a sugar free non fat latte from dunkin donuts- i haven't tried it yet- frankly I am scared to ask for splenda sweetened coffee at the drive thru - i can't tell the difference between that and real sugar- and what if they get it wrong??? yikes that would hurt I have had a few cups here and there since the surgery- nothing consistent- and never had a problem tolerating it- in fact it helps you "make" if you know what I mean.

From one coffee lover to another...I feel your pain...I am a D&D feind and loved my large hazelnut light with sweet and low PRE-OP...POST -OP: I now drink one cup of decaf hazelnut in the am, and usually only make it thru half that 8oz. I do however love tea now and drink that with the 'real lemon' almost all the time.....it is strange how our tastebuds change....good luck with your caffeination issues ....I haven't gone back to work yet, so I am not sure how I am going to be as a DECAF psych nurse (my patients will be listening to me ) ---Drea

Thank you ladies, I see I am in good company when it comes to coffee addiction. I might try a cup of high test this weekend. I could use the "go" factor Cheers , Chrissy

I was told coffee is fine but when I do drink it I MUST have 1 1/2 cups of fluid for every cup of regular coffee because coffee acts as a diaretic. So we won't get dehydrated. Good luck with your FULL PLATE.

Coffee was hailed by the ancients as the nectar of the gods. It still is. Sure, it can have a diuretic effect (you lose about 1/2 of the coffee you drink due to the more-frequent diuretic effect of it)-- so, for me that has meant just drinking twice as much coffee as I did prior to surgery. Actually, in moderation, combined with efforts to keep lots of non-caffeinated fluids in you, coffee won't hurt you post-op (provided you don't start drinking it immediately after surgery).
