My name is Ericka and I live in New Britain, CT. Ive been looking into the gastric bypass surgery for some time and finally asked my PCP for a referal, which she gave me with no hesitations. Im 5ft 9in-ish and about 300 pounds. My BMI is at 42 or 43. ::sighs:: Im looking into the surgery with Dr. Giles here in New Britain. He does open Rouen Y by pass surgery, excuse the error in spelling if I got that wrong. ::smile:: Ive spoken to the nurse several times on the phone about the out of pocket expenses and have to call her tomorrow, Tues Feb 21, 2006 regarding my insurance coverage. There are 12 weeks of classes required with this surgeon which makes me feel comfortable. I am also looking into other surgeons at this time as I was hoping to not have to go with the "open" surgery. My friend Chrissie told me about this site, shes out in Pittsburgh, PA and a definate "support sister" of mine. Well... thats all for now, just wanted to say hello and best of luck to all. ~Ericka~

Hi Ericka, Good luck on your weight loss journey. I too am waiting to get a date and fulfilling all of my insurance requirements at this time as well as getting the required exams needed for the surgeon. Welcome to the OH boards, it is kind of quiet tonight but usually there are lots of people welcoming you (and I am sure they will when they are online), and many that will reply if you have any questions or are in need of support. Take care and keep us updated! Nancy K

Hello Ericka - Congratulations on making such a healthy decision for yourself. You do not have to go the open route, there are plenty of extremely wonderful doctors all over Connecticut that do the bypass laproscopically - (of course there are never any guarantees that is won't end up open). If your hope is to not have open, then you should pursue that path. Best of luck to you! Tammy Count Down: 16 days!

Hi Ericka, Welcome! I had my open RNY with Dr. Aranow. He has a great info meeting that is a standard meeting for all his patients, but it is very informative if you are looking for more info. I will be 3 months post op on the 28th and have lost 50 lbs. I started at 259 with a BMI of 45. Lots of luck to you on your journey! Hugs, Chrissy
