Hello All.
I am happy to say that I made it through my 6/26/ surgery without complication. Well I had a slight one...it seems I was allergic to my pain medication, Demerol (?). That caused 2 days of dry heaves which I thought was going to kill me!!   Not two seconds after the day after barium testing I started again...you know, color drains from your face, cold sweats and then the excruciating abdominal contractions. I told Dr. R I was feeling poorly and he asked the RN to change my meds but "she forgot" so the torture continued another day. Talk about "buyers remorse."

Dr. R finally realized the nurse had not followed his direction which infuriated him!  He couldn't apologies enough to me. With that said I am safe and sound in my own home on a different med (which I don't seem to need as often). My kids have been a god sent and my family continues to check in and send flowers.

I am so thankful for everyone that has kept in touch with me during this process from start to finish from the CT forum. Kathy has really helped me these last few days when I was in such misery. Thanks Kathy and everyone else who has freely shared their wisdom, hope and strength here. You have all enriched my life and I look forward to the times ahead.
Respectfully,
Mimi

Good to hear you are home and on the mend. A little bump on the road to recovery with that medication reaction, it will soon be forgotten once you start seeing that weight steadily drop and begin to feel so much better.

Best wishes for a quick recovery and a successful wls journey.

UGH!!! More "buyers remorse" will come later. It last about a few days. I had it when I was wondering what the hell did i do cause I wanted to eat something. I LOVED vitamin time since I could chew. I even started to "chew" my shakes. Oh and look out for when the fat releases the estrogen. Get ready for PMS from Hell. Another time I had remorse.

You get through it and feel better in the end. Even now with the BP issues I don't have any buyer's remorse.

Good luck with everything and glad to see you on the losing side!

Thanks for all your kind words. I am still not feeling up to par but seem to be improving a little everyday. I am walking as much as I can without getting lightheaded, drinking as much as I can without exploding and trying to incorporate as much protein in those clear fluids as I can.

My sister had a DS about 5 yrs ago and called to warn me about the hormonal roller coaster I will be on. She said she was buying clothes she wouldn't be caught dead in but at the time thought the looked "cute". I see Dr R tomorrow to have the drain taken out. One more step towards recovery. Can't wait!!

Congratulations! I'm glad your feeling better and on your way!!!

I am so close to having the RNY but I have been reading about the DS and think that is the route that I want to go. There are not any surgeons in CT that do the DS so I would have to go to NY or Jersey. I am curious, with your sister having had the DS and being able to share her experience  , is there a reason why you had the RNY instead?

It seems that the afterlife is a little easier with the DS according to what I have read.
I hope you are not offended by my asking as I am just inquiring for any feedback about the difference. Thanks!

Some one down on the shore does DS. I forget who but there is someone here in CT that does them.

There were a few reasons I did not go with the DS. I know people who have had the DS can be very passionate about their choice of surgery and I do not want to dispute that but this was my experience and choice.

My sister was convinced I needed the DS. She mentioned that there were only 2 surgeons she would recommend. One in Virginia and another in California. California was to far for me and was out of my insurance network. My sister offered to pay for travel and the surgery but I felt very uncomfortable have a Dr so far away if there were complications. I did call the surgeon in VA, (I can get you his name if you like), and the nurse said that they usually did not do DS with anyone with a BMI under 50, mine was 43. The higher rate of malnutrition was another concern.

My sister is thrilled with her DS and is vigilant with her vitamins after 4 years.  I hope this helped and good luck with your decision. It is a major one!

Mimi,

I'm glad things worked out and that you are home recuperating! I didn't have buyer's remorse until after the 2nd week when I only lost 4 pounds. Dr. R is concerned and I have to see him in another 2 weeks instead of the normal 6 week post-op appointment to make sure I'm losing more weight.

I hope I'm just retaining water and I'll lose big this week.

I started back to work yesterday and it was hell. I'm glad you have more time off because it will really aid in the speed of your recovery, I think.

Good luck and it will be a happy day once you get that drain out--I hated mine and was so happy to have it out!

Becky
