My surgery
Look at it this way- you found out about it before your body told you in a less than desirable way (ie syncopal episodes) that you needed to get iron in you. whether or not the PS gets postponed is irrelevent. What is important now is your general health and wellbeing. Walking around with a Iron that low is dragging you whether you know it or not.
You will have more energy and feel better if you bring it up within normal range. You know you will get your PS and you know that you are approved already- so relax get your general health in control and everything else will occur in due time. Think of it this way- what good is fixing up the exterior of the house if the foundation is crumbling? Priorities girlfriend, priorities~Be well feel well - and relax....good luck
Jess,
I can understand why you need to raise it. You don't want to be anemic before surgery, as your surgery will take a lot out of you. The panniculectomy usually results in a larger than normal blood loss because of the number of vessels present in the tissue (but you knew that). Unfortunately, women tend to have higher amounts of iron deficiency due to menstruation, something that thankfully I've not had to deal with. My iron was alwyas on the low side, but I supplmented it with two 65mg tablets in the morning and two 65mg tablets in the evening of CVS brand iron tablets or Nature Made iron tablets, available at drugstore.com and others. I was able to raise my iron considerably before surgery.
You're in good hands, if your surgeon advises against it, you're better off to wait a few more weeks. I'll be there in another week, I can bring you a bottle if you'd like. Unfortunately this time around, my surgery wasn't voluntary, but my daily regimen of iron kept me prepared none the less and I'm recovering quickly.
All the best,
--Steve
