My surgery

So, I did my pre-op bloodwork and at the same time I also did my yearly just to see what my levels looked like. My iron is so bad that the doctors told me that unless I get it up to an acceptable range before surgery (we are talking like 20 days), it will have to be postponed. I am so upset. I am going to get my iron pills today but do you think that its possible to bring it up high enough? Normal range is between 6-137 and mine is a 2.5 Jessica

Jessica, Sorry to hear about your surgery but, it's important for you to be in the best health for surgery. Take those iron pills and before you know it the levels will be up. Good Luck!! JEN

Oh Jessica, I am so sorry. It wont hurt to try it. Look at me with my B12 - that was so low I had to go have injections. Keep trying, but it wont be the end of the world if you have to bump it up some. Keep me posted. Good luck to you!!! Bree

Sorry to hear about your Iron levels. You may be able to get them up in time for surgery. Don't be discouraged. Eat some lean red meat.....or liver if you can tolerate it.(easier said then done).....and do the Iron pills too. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! Take care, Kelly

Jessica, My partner has had to put off her surgery to have 4 endoscopy done to seal off abnormal blood vessels in her stomach. That is what was causing her low iron levels. Her levels are coming up nicely but she takes iron 3 times a day and it is working. So just do what they ask and everthing will work out.

Yes! I think it's possible!!! You'll feel much better when you get your levels up too! I've heard that taking Folic Acid (cheap and small, availalbe at any drugstore) supplements increases success with retaining B-12 & iron. My b-12 is in the crapper (but, I'm post op) so I'm learning about all this stuff now. There are lost of foods which are iron rich too, -spinach comes to mind- so you can concentrate on some of these. Go to Web Md and look up iron deficiency, they have a section of 'home remedy' which is very helpful to read. Best wishes, Lisa C

jessica, there's a very good product called iron and herbs, by floradix, it's a liquid, and it won't constipate you. i know for a fact that they sell it at the garden of light, in glastonbury, but you may be able to find it at the vitamin shoppe in manchester, or else try parcade health. good luck. patty

You better get that iron level up there - otherwise who will be my roommate? Take a deep breath - you only have to get it to 6 to be normal right? You can do that - go get the liquid stuff that Patty wrote about - she's my best friend and she's brilliant - not to mention she knows what she's talking about. Take another deep breath so you don't get stressed because stress does all kinds of funky things. When do you have to go get your labs again? Will they give you right up until the very end? If so, you have plenty of time! I'm sending postive thoughts and prayers your way. Isn't life ironic, first you're talking about freaking out and backing out - now look at what happened! Geeze that roller coaster of emotions sure does a number......... I have a feeling it will all work out fine for you, try not to get too upset - there's a lot of people routing for you! Best Regards, Tammy Count down: 21 days
