Well, "it" finally happened to me

Well, I went out to dinner last night to Friendly's and it turned out that Friendly's food wasn't so friendly to me. I ordered sirloin steak tips marinated in something with mashed potos and mixed veggies. I asked that the meat be cooked medium. Well, my plate arrived and I started to cut the meat. I immediately noticed that the meat was well-done, dry & chewy. So I figured I do small pieces and put alittle mashed potos with each piece to give it some moisture. I maybe ate one or two tips before things went bad. I landed in the bathroom over the toilet. Up came my dinner. I was pretty proud of having gone 7 months post-op before throwing up but thats changed. I realized that the worst part of throwing up is the pressure in my throat and in my back (between by shoulder blades). Once I threw up I felt immediately better. I thought for sure I would be hungry within a few hours but I wasn't. In fact, I am still not hungry (14 hours later). I have a feeling of "heavyness" in my lower abdomen and I have a sensation in my throat. I don't believe anything is blocking the pipes because I did eat 3 spoonfulls of oatmeal this morning with no problem. I also notice I have been burping alot since my episode. Was wondering if anyone else's experience was like mine? Oh well, lesson learned. Don't eat well-done, dry meat.

(laughs) Well, I guess congratulations - of a sort - are in order. Welcome to the club, Michelle. I STILL have problems with beef and just avoid it, and anything that's "more done" than medium RARE for me is a red flag. Bette

My favorite answer to "How would youl like it cooked?" is " I want to to still be mooing " If they look at me puzzled, I tell them beef is best when is is capable of walking off the plate! Wonder why I get such confused looks BUT..................... No matter how veal is cooked, or most pork, it is still rough on my pouch. 3+ years later. Ice cream... that's another story! Peter

MY favorite SMARTYPANTS answer is "Just drive some cattle in here. I'll pick out one I like, slice a piece off and ride the rest home." Vegetarians, vegans and PETA people, I apologize for the graphicness of that statement. Bette

Thanks Bette, I'll have to remember this when we have lunch. Bree (the vegetarian)

Hi Michelle, Our pouches do have a way of drawing a line as to what they will tolerate. They are lessons we rarely need to be reminded of again. Just take it slow as far as eating again, your probably in shock at the whole experence. Know it really throws me out of whack. Take care, Julio

Sorry about that incident; however, your pain is my gain. I seriously don't want to sound sarcastic, but as an upcoming member of the "band club", this is a lesson I will put in my head. Thanks for sharing!!!! Keep up the good work, I am assuming that everything is otherwise okay. Joe

I think the lesson humbles us. It reminds us we have to be respectful of the tool and not to forget it's there. At least for me it does and then the next day I can't have anything but very soft stuff. But it does humble me. Keeps me in check.

Hey Michelle, Sorry to hear you got sick. I am one year out and there still are things that make me sick too. This is definately a learning experience for us all here at the OH family. I have a really tough time with some pork and hamburgers. I had steak for the first time but plain. Be careful with all the marinates too, they have alot of junk in them. Take care and good luck sweetie, you are doing great and will be fine. Hugs KimC

Michelle, I don't get hungry for hours after and "episode" either. I think that is normal.... strange but normal. My Mom made dinner one night when we were visiting and I had to refuse to eat her pork chops because they were so dry and well done. She got a little offended, but rather have her offended than to have to go through hours of discomfort. Sorry you had to be at a restaurant when that happened. terri
