Come on July 14 already!!!!!!

I am absolutely thrilled to say that I have been approved and have surgery scheduled on July 14 for RNY!!!! After years of wanting this surgery, and being denied by my insurance company, it's going to happen! I am so excited that I think I might have to be sedated until July 14
There is one thing I'm a little nervous about... did anyone have an abdominal drain? I am a veterinary technician and we use them often in surgeries. The animals never really enjoy having them pulled and I was wondering about other people's experiences.
Also, I've told people that I'm close to, but I really don't feel the need to tell everyone I know. I'm pretty sure people will know something is going on once I start losing weight, but I want to keep it to myself for now. Maybe it's because I've tried to have the surgery before and it didn't happen... I'm not sure.

Congratulations!!! I am so happy for you.

You most likely will have a drain for a short time. I had two that were removed before I left the hospital, but they kept me in for three days, not sure how long people are staying now so you  might go home with one, but no big deal really. WHen the drain was taken out it was uncomfortable very briefly, it felt very weird too as I could feel it moving out but it is quick so try not to worry too much.

Wishing you all the best.

Dr Tim did my surgery on 3/19. I came out of surgery with six tiny incisions that were glued(sutures deeper inside). There were no drains at all. I was up walking and eating broth about six hours after surgery. The only thing that was annoying was the catheter, but that was minor. Definitely buy yourself a few boxes of Gas-X strips (not the pills) and pack them in your hospital bag. It really helps relieve the pressure from the gas they use during the surgery.

There is no need to tell anyone except those people close to you. You do not need a million people asking you about your private life. Your family and friends will have plenty of questions. I look forward to going to work sometimes to have conversations that revolve around anything but the surgery. Sure some people have noticed and remarked, I just tell them I am seeing a nutritionist which is 100% true.

This period leading up to your surgery is a very exciting time. Once you start the 2 week pre-op diet, it goes by very fast. Use this time to get ahead on some chores, paying bills, etc all the things you might not feel like doing right after the surgery. Physically, I felt pretty good the 2 weeks I stayed home after the surgery, but the anethesia made my brain very sluggish. This doesn't happen to everyone, but I was surprised how I had little capacity to concentrate on anything, even watching tv.

Congratulations and I am sure you will be as happy and successful with this surgery as I am. Dr. Tim is a great surgeon and the team he has assembled for us patients is fantastic.

First of all...Congratulations Butterflyz!! My surgery date is this Friday, so I don't know how it feels to have the drain in or removed but I know my Dr. sends all of his patients home with a JP drain. Others I know either don't have one or they are removed before they go home. I will have to empty and measure the drainage twice a day. It will be removed on my 1 week visit.
Others have told me that it is a little weird when they take it out but not much pain...quick and easy.

Good Luck !

ps. I haven't told many people about my surgery. I just told my 84 yr. old mother today.

Thank you all for your input! I got some stuff in the mail yesterday from my insurance company saying that I am pre-approved for a 1 day hospital stay. I'm not panicked yet.... but I know I need more than one day in the hospital!

Don't worry about only one day in the hospital.  I was only in there for 1 day, and was more than ready to go home!  Every doctor is different, and things may be different for each type of surgery, and open vs. laparascopic, but I had drains in only for the day I was in the hospital.  Doc took them out before I left.  It felt weird, but not painful.  I was worried about that too!  You can feel the tube moving, but it doesn't hurt.  So if you have a drain, it's not a big deal.  Better that than having a problem with fluid collecting and having no way to get it out.  Just like every other aspect of any of these surgeries, just follow the rules, do what your doc tells you, and you'll do fine.  Best wishes next month!
