Okay so I have tried a few different things since getting the green light Friday to begin Stage 4. I have done ground up Turkey with broth, soft scrambled egg, cottage cheese, and tuna mashed up with lowfat mayo. Well- after I eat- and I am only doing like an ounce at a time- so it can't be size- I am getting nauseated, shaky and weak. I feel like crud. I don't have any cramping/diarrhea, nor sweating or vomiting. If I had a glucometer I'd check the blood sugar, but I don't- maybe its a situation where becasue Ihave all of the sudden put something other than a liquid in my gut I am dumping out insulin thus dropping my blood sugar. I dunno. Any suggestions? (Other than Call Dr Aranow- I tried that-he's not on call- I will call the office tomorrow)

I am sorry to hear you are having some trouble Bernadette. It doesn't sound like you are doing anything out of the ordinary and you are making good choices for stage 4. Maybe your pouch isn't ready for stage 4 yet. I would just back up to stage 3 until you can talk to Dr A. Keep us posted. terri

Hey Bernadette, I know what your going through, it was tough for me at that stage too. You may want to go back to stage 3 like Terri said and Call Dr. A to find out what you should do. Take it slow and try some purees again after alittle while. Keep up the good work and good luck sweetie. It will get better Hugs KimC

Hello nurse....... Let's see what we can add to this. First of all, the likelyhood of having a dumping from what you have described is very low. Possible... always possible. Likely.... no. But let's look at some of the things you are having. First of all, many post-ops have trouble with eggs so that in and of itself can be that answer. Great source of protein, easily digestable for an adult stomach, but rough on a pouch. Cottage cheese.. is it the low fat kind, the regular, or even one of the ones with fruit added? Fruit is still a no-no at this stage. Turkey..... I have more trouble with white meat than dark meat. Just an FYI. Tuna... dark or white?? Again, dark easier for me. Of course, one more thing.... how long are you chewing your foods? 30 chews or more per baby teaspoon size serving. The things you are describing should not cause you to dump alot of insulin. My personal guess, the texture of the foods are upsetting your pouch and is causing you to feel like you have been run over by a truck. Eating is a learning experience for the rest of your life. What works today may not work tomorrow, and vice versa. Just hang in there, it will get better with time. Peter

I have 32 chickens Peter and you are telling me EGGS MIGHT NOT AGREE WITH ME FOR A LONG TIME?????? Cripes. That sucks. I had eggs every morning pre-op on the South Beach diet. But you may be on to something as that caused the worst episode of the shaky weak thing. The tuna was chunk light packed in water and the cottage cheese is low fat plain. The turkey I can see- probably too rough. White meat. I hear thats often a problem. I am going to step back to stage three for a few days and give my pouch a rest and try again after that, with something benign- any suggestions?

This is suck a personal thing, expecially when the pouch is so new. You WILL be able to eat eggs again. Just might not be thte time, but try fried or poached first. Chili and refried beans with cheese was another staple I can remember from the old days. Just hang in there. This will change daily, and you will have good and bad days... eventually more good than bad. The bad one just remind us of where we have been. Peter

I just need to normalize my self a bit so I can return to work next weekend- at least for a half day or so- ( I normally work 2 12 hour shifts on the weekend) Its not eay to drive around feeling like crud taking care of people who feel like crud too. you tend to end up sitting with a patient on the couch sharing tales of woe feeling crummy..LOL.

Hi Bernadette, When I started eating at stage 4 I always ate with a baby spoon. Made it easier for me as eating too fast, even small amounts made me feel like, well, you know. As far as sampling, as long as it fits in your food processor , go for it! Gotta tall ya, annthing is better than baby food. That stuff is poison!! Take care and good luck. Julio

Hey there Bernadette. I'm kinda a day late and a dollar short on this reply...But, Pete's totally right. You're going to have to keep on trying until you find something that agrees. Going back to stage 3 to calm you pouch is a good idea. The, try again with the food that annoyed you LEAST so far. Try one food a day, if you can. Eventually, you'll find there are one or two SAFE foods you can eat that you will fall back on. Mine was tuna with lite mayo and a cracker or two. I ate that every day at least 2x a day for weeks. YUK! I really don't like tuna much any more. BUT, it was a lifesaver for me, especially when the grumpy pouch didn't feel like behaving. It took me a while before I could eat eggs. In fact, from time to time now I still have a stray egg problem. Go figure. Hang in there. You're doing great. Best, Lisa C
