NASTY CARBOS .. HOW MANY A DAY!
I need to know (since I have no money to go and see the nutrionist,) ... how many carbs should we be taking in during a day? Does anyone have any breakdowns???
I find that I am ingesting more carbs, but I eat so little. If I have a way to measure, I can watch myself. Can someone help me? Very few ever respond to me and I need to know.
Thanks
Blknectar
According to the Stage Five part of the handout I have- which is essentially where you are- maintainence- you should focus on protein first then veggies and then starches- (carbs) there are good carbs- veggies and bad carbs- starchy things- potatoes, breads, pastas, sugar.
The starchy carbs should be last and least. no more than 4-6 servings a day- a serving being some of the following (don't you have this handout somewhere ? I got it preop from Elina)
1/4 cup potatos, peas, corn, rice pasta, hot cereal,
1/2 slice bread
2-3 crackers
1-1/2 cps popcorn
1/2 c cold cereal
1/2 oz snak chips
avoid
pastries croissants
muffins donuts cookies cake biscuits butter crackers goldfish granola french fires fried chips
cheese curls mac and chz fettucini alfredo
Hi, Jannie!
If you're available on Mon. evening, Jan. 30th (3 wks. from tonight), that's the 5th Mon. of the mo. (which only happens a few times a yr.). Those are the nights when the support group meeting at Middlesex is run by Elina Schwartz (the dietician). That would be a time when you could ask her questions for free. Granted, it's in a group setting, but sometimes we can benefit from hearing others' questions...maybe even something that hasn't occurred to us.
The meeting's from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Hope to see you then (if not sometime sooner at a meeting),
Debby
Debbie, I came to the meetings faithfully, but for the last 5 months have slacked off as I kept hearing the same things. I may come to the Tuesday group, but as I work strange hours it is not possible. But I have the handout and I will read it. I was more so concerned if ther is a certain amout a day. When I was a diabetic, I was told 60 mgs a day of carbs, is it the same. Thanks for responding,
The early post-op plan that worked for me, and that we advocate at our support group meetings for early post-ops (the third Wednesday of every month at Norwalk Hospital starting at 6 p.m.) is to try to keep you daily carb intake to below 25 grams per day. After vitamins and supplements, we find that there are is room for some minor carbs that will come from certain cheeses and from some of the protein shakes.
There is no need for dry cereal, snack chips or popcorn. Are those foods necessarily bad? Absolutely not. But, the fact remains that they are carbs and that introducing them early on can lead to backsliding to old snacking habits.
Good luck-- and, if you don't mind the drive to Norwalk, you are more than welcomed to attend our meetings.
she's not early post op steve- she's a year out
me? I am early and I agree- I can't even get all the flipping vitamins and supplements and my regular meds down without feeling like a stuffed turkey on thanksgiving day. Never mind eating anything "extra" criminy I still have 20 more grams of protein to eat today - and I haven't even touch my vitamins yet...yeesh.
Thanks Julio, I am a year out, and just wondered. I eat so little but not the right things and I know it. I was told when I was a diabetic, 15 for breakfast 30 for lunch and 45 for dinner. That seems too much now. Thanks for your reply, I live 5 minutes from the Middletown support group, but did not feel a part of it, so I stopped. I live in Middletown so the drive would be too much but thank you for the invitation. I guess, I will have to figure it out myself. Thanks
