Is middle age a WLS issue?

Lap Band on 08/01/06 with
Hello...I'm finding these messageboards an excellent resource, however I haven't come across any posts regarding healing and age. I am 58 years old and I am somewhat concerned with my ability to heal in a timely manner. My hope is for lap band surgery simply because it is the least invasive procedure. And I'm not in a hurry to lose a lot of weight, although I am enthusiastic about the possibility of surgery to assist me in these efforts. I AM concerned with my age though. I worry that I might encounter complications because I am middle aged. And I am hypothyroid, and my metabolism is slow and that too might slow down the healing. (plus the hair loss worrys me as well). So...does anyone have any thoughts in regards to this. Thank you in advance. - Cynthia

I was 54 when I had the surgery and I have never felt better. Age I think has a lot to do with the maturity of having the surgery. Let's face it, it's easier now than if I would have had it 15 years ago or even 10. I think that the health level that you have prior to surgery is more important than age. I healed well and was walking 5 miles by the time that I was 4 weeks out. I know that age was n ot an issue for me, and myfiance that I have too much energy and he is much much younger than I and we are getting married next year. Age is not an issue, your committment is. The healing and other things that go along with the surgery are on an individual basis. Good Luck and keep us posted. Jannie

Thanks Jannie! Its such a relief to read your response and (after digging around this site) reading about other "50-somethings" who have had weight loss surgery. I laughed out loud when I read your response about your much younger fiance. I married a much younger man ten years ago and tapped into his favorite sport: the joys of computer/couch potatoeing. Today my research is moving in the direction of lap band surgery and whether or not my insurance carrier (Cigna) will pay for it. So far, I'm reading they seem to approve RNY but not lap band. I am more inclined to a less invasive surgery, but I'm not an expert. I trust the surgeon I've picked is going to advise me well. Tonight is the first orientation and informational lecture and my husband is coming with me and I'll find out more about this. I appreciate your response. This is an important decision, as you well know. Any and all input is very valuable to me. Again, thanks!! Cynthia

I was 49 at the time, but chose RNY vs lap banding. Glad with the decision. Although some insurance companies do not allow for lap bands, let the office do their job. It would probably be denied, and approved on instant appeal. Ask Lois about what has happened int he past for some guidance. Peter

Lap Band on 08/01/06 with
Thanks Peter. I've had my concerns about age put to rest (somewhat). But now I'm not so sure about lapband vs RNY. My husband and I went to the introductory seminar last night. I was very impressed with Dr. Aranow. VERY. He seems very thorough both in his thinking, conclusions and procedures. Obviously he didn't diagnose, just presented his opinions and experiences with all procedures. At this point, I'm thinking lapband may not be "it", particularly because it has been known to increase reflux. And the type of complications associated with lapband are offputting. Plus, and this is a big plus, my insurance is not likely to approve it. Or may delay approval. As a middleaged woman, time is an issue for me. I'll soon be 59 and 59 quickly turns into 60. Decisions decisions. But good decisions I think. I gotta say, it's actually comforting to know there may very well be a solution to this weight craziness of mine. I know that's a little nuts...to think major surgery is a comforting thought..but for me it is. ANY viable solution or means to an end to this is a comfort. Thank you for your response. Cynthia
