New here so i figured i would introduce myself
Hi everyone. I have lurked around here a bit for the last year or so occasionaly browsing through the forums and picking up bits and peices of advice here and there. For the past 8 months or so i have been going through the steps to prepare for the surgery and about 3 weeks ago i recieved insurance approval and actually have my preop appt tomorrow afternoon, where i assume i will schedule my surgery date as well as go over how to prepare for the surgery. I figured i would introduce myself a bit and say hi since i am sure in the next few days ill have quite a few questions and concerns as my date comes closer.
I have been working with Dr. Tishler and will be having the RNY surgery at Hartford Hospital. I would love any advice or tips that anyone has to share as well as any questions anyone may have for me.
Thanks
Adam

Thanks everyone, I had my preop appt and everything went well. I had lost 17 or so pounds since my last appt so Dr. Tishler was quite pleased with that. I was also given my surgery date of March 2nd. I have to have another physical between now and then to make sure everything is still the same, otherwise in about a month i start my preop diet and then have the surgery in about 6 weeks :)
Adam,
Welcome to OH CT. Congratulations on the insurance approval. Now the fun begins, and I mean fun. Follow your doctors instructions and hang on.
I didn't have RNY, but with any WLS go into it thinking of it as a tool rather than a cure and you will do great. It's that little (well BIG) extra help with losing weight. Make sure you keep up on your protein, vitamins, exercise, and Dr appt, and you will be very happy.
I had my WLS (VBG) on Feb 29th of last year. I am could not be happier with my decision or my results. If you haven't yet, try a few different protein shakes before you need them. Its not a bad idea to try to follow a restricted diet before surgery. It will make the post op diet easier to take.
I tried a lot of protein shakes and bars. My favorite shake is from lisa lynn fitness in westport. Lisalynnfitness.com Chocolate is pretty good, vanilla is tolerable, strawberry banana is horrible. I also like pure protein shakes. You can get them premixed at vitamin world by the case or at GNC indivually. I tried chocolate and oreo. Not as good as Lisa Lynn's, but since it isn't mail order, its good in a pinch. These are both good because they are high in protein but low in sugar.
I also use pure protein bars (available at Target, walmart, walgreens). I started them when I could go to solids, but still needed to supplement protein. Only 180 calories, 18-20gm of protein depending on flavor, and very little sugar. It isn't a snickers bar, but not bad for a meal replacement or an after workout supplement.
Feel free to PM with any questions. I would be happy to help. I started at 350 on January 1st 2008. I now way about 190.
Good luck, Ron

Welcome aboard, Adam! I'm about to celebrate my 5th year anniversary (wow!!!) and would be happy to help in any way that I can. I'm curious about something - it looks like you're in Middletown, can I ask why you're not going with your local surgeon, Dr. Aranow? Just curious! Be well - when is your surgery? Maureen
