Body Fat analysis scales

I've been trying to compare my BMI with my Body Fat percentage, since I've found out that BMI does not take into account how much muscle weight vs. fat weight you have. We've got one of these BF analysis scales at home, and my surgeons' office provides one at preop seminars. Seems like every time I use one, it's like playing the stock market: sometimes my BF is up, sometimes down. If any of you have the same problem, here's some info I found online: How well-hydrated you are when the test is done, and your temperature, prior exercise and meals, all can affect results. Also, impedance devices are typically less accurate for people who are obese or very lean. For best results, get tested first thing in the morning, before you've eaten or exercised but about a half-hour to an hour after you've had a glass of water. Also, avoid testing during menstruation because some women retain water during that time. (laughs) And STILL, after all that, everyone says it's just a rough estimate. Bette 376/175~~~December 2003

Bette: OK here goes a dumb ? But.....does extra skin throw the test off? When I went to the gym he used the pinchy thing on me. Just a thought? Chryssie

(laughs) I'm just picturing someone coming at you with a crab! Actually, my company is having a wellness seminar tomorrow all about body fat percentage, so maybe I can come back with a little more information for everyone. I was wondering the same thing as you - I didn't know where they put the calipers to test. I guess I'll see tomorrow. Bette
